The Cotuit Kettleers welcomed all audiences to their open practice on Wednesday as the team prepares for the 2019 season. As new players grew closer and team coaches showcased their wisdom, the practice was surely a success.
The session began at 10:30 a.m with players trotting onto their new home, Lowell Park. The beloved field and all of its workers have seen their fair share of new players, and welcomed this year’s group with open arms.
The time spent on the field consisted of typical baseball lore such as batting, fielding, and pitching drills. Players from colleges across the country were able to blend their playstyles together and gain familiarity with one another, even if their schools didn’t like each other too much just a few months prior.
Leading the Kettleers was of course head coach Mike Roberts. The veteran leader is taking part in his 16th season in Cape Cod and his goal has stayed put in each and every one of them, and that’s to win the championship.
Roberts has had the privilege of not only meeting hundreds of collegiate athletes throughout the years, but has been able to mentor them in their careers as well. As soon as he meets his new players, he’s focused on helping them improve in any way he can.
“We have a particular culture here in Cotuit both on and off the field that we want to develop and that’s the first thing we work on. Being great people in the community and in our host homes.” said Roberts.
Roberts is fully aware how each player suiting up for him is talented, but knows there's always room for improvement. If each member of the roster can adapt to the Cape League and become more consistent, Roberts feels the group will be a hard team to challenge.
“I want to bring up areas to see how polished they are and who’s throwing strikes, making contact, and moving runners up. There’s a lot of good baseball players around but there’s not many polished baseball players.” said Roberts.
Roberts and the rest of the Kettleers aim to bounce back from last season and establish themselves as a tough opponent in Cape Cod moving forward. The club’s first game is at home on Monday, June 10th at 5:00 p.m.
