WAREHAM – Freshman right-hander Andy Sadoski (Bridgewater St.) is no stranger to Whitehouse Field in Harwich. Two weeks ago, his Bridgewater State Bears were playing there in the NCAA DIII tournament. Before that, he was a senior at Harwich High School.

This summer, he’ll be returning to his home field in a Harwich Mariners uniform, after earning a temporary contract at the Frank Finn tryouts Memorial Day.

The 6’4 native has been in Mariners colors before, as a ten-year-old bat boy. When Harwich Field Manager Steve Englert heard Sadoski would be at the tryouts, he made a point of waiting till the very end to see Sadoski pitch.

“I knew he was from Harwich and I knew he was going to be here. Got to try to take care of the local kids,” said Englert. “He did a good job today. He’ll probably be a middle reliever, coming out of the pen. Depends on who shows up, it’s really hard to gauge what our needs are.”

The annual tryout, which saw some 80 invitees this year, is meant to temporarily fill roster positions vacant because of the College World Series and Team USA invitations.

“I think it’s awesome to be able to give a kid an opportunity like this, a kid from the hometown,” added Englert.“I always look to the local kids. It’ll be a good opportunity for him, especially since he grew up with it his whole life.”

Sadoski made six appearances in his debut year at Bridgewater State, striking out eleven batters in 12.1 innings pitched.

“It’s an incredible feeling getting to live out your dream,” said Sadoski, who didn’t expect much more than meeting new faces and fitting in a work out at the tryouts. “It means a lot to me.”

He will join his new teammates on June 10th as the Mariners face the Orleans Firebirds at Eldridge Park at 7pm to open the season. The Mariners open at home the next night at 7pm against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.
