Cotuit should again be formidable

COTUIT -- After reaching the championship series two straight years without capturing the Arnold Mycock Trophy, Cotuit aims to take the next step in 2010.

Fueled by a roster that promises speed, strong hitting and an impressive bullpen, the Kettleers look to take the Cape by storm.

The big news comes in the form of outfielder Michael Yastrzemski (Vanderbilt), the grandson of Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski. The younger Yaz, a freshman with the Commodores, has high expectations placed on him thanks to his heritage. His late father, Mike, is also a league alum.

On the mound, the Kettleers hope to mix things up with submariner Michael Frongello (Davidson) and right-hander Erik Johnson (Cal-Berkeley), whose performance this spring suggests he might make a strong impact in the starting rotation. Johnson is 6-2, 3.07 for the Golden Bears, with 60 strikeouts in 58.2 innings.

For speed, Cotuit looks to Jonathan Taylor (Georgia) and Chad Wright (Kentucky). Taylor is a teammate of returning player     , who starred last summer with the Kettleers, driving in 20 runs and scoring 16.

Possibly returning is All-Star West MVP Zack Cox (Arkansas), who led Cotuit with a .344 average. The steady infielder helped the Kettleers qualify for the playoffs before being sidelined with an injury. He’s projected to be signed in the first round of the MLB draft, making his return to Lowell Park uncertain.

Further standouts on the roster include infielder Brad Miller (Clemson) and right-hander Sonny Gray (Vanderbilt), who have both been invited to the Team USA tryouts this July.
