The Coca-Cola Pitcher and Player of the Week Award will continue this year to highlight the Cape League’s brightest stars. The first two recipients of the honor, given to players who perform above and beyond expectations, will be named on Sunday, June 20, following the first full week of games.

The award has proven to be an indicator of success, both during the summer and beyond. Six of the 16 players who were honored last summer were named to the CCBL All-League team.

Bourne’s Kyle Roller (East Carolina) ----- last season’s only repeat winner of the honor ---- was selected Cape League MVP. Not coincidently, five members of the 2009 champion Braves were named Pitcher or Player of the Week.

Five of last year’s award winners were also taken early in the 2010 Major League Baseball Entry Draft. Orleans’ Gary Brown (Cal State-Fullerton) was selected with the 24th overall pick by the San Francisco Giants. Falmouth’s Todd Cunningham (Jacksonville State) was taken with the 53rd overall pick by the Atlanta Braves. Harwich’s Leon Landry (LSU) was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the third round, and Brewster pitcher Kyle Blair (San Diego) and Cotuit hurler Justin Grimm (Georgia) were taken in the fourth and fifth rounds by the Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers, respectively.

Each week’s winners of the Coca Cola Pitcher and Player of the Week award will be chosen by Pointstreak Sports Technologies, Inc.
