COCA COLA PITCHER OF THE WEEK:

Mark Appel, Y-D RHP

One of the most impressive pitching performances of this year’s playoffs has earned Mark Appel (Stanford) the final Coca Cola Pitcher of the Week award of the 2011 Cape Cod Baseball League season. Appel started Game 1 of Y-D’s opening round series versus Orleans and completely shut down the Firebird offense, to the tune of eight shutout innings and 10 strikeouts.

Appel pitched only two regular-season games for Y-D this year after joining the team late in the season following a stint with Team USA.

Appel promises to be a name that fans may be hearing again in the future. The 6’6 junior is projected to be selected as high as third overall by some experts in this year’s Major League Baseball draft. Appel was named a second team preseason All-American before this past year at Stanford, and posted a 3.02 earned run average against some of the best competition in the country.

COCA COLA PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
John Wooten, Harwich IF

The Cape League championship series’ biggest bat has captured the final Coca Cola Player of the Week award of the season. John Wooten (East Carolina) blasted a home run in each game of Harwich’s series sweep of Falmouth to capture the 2011 Cape Cod Baseball League Championship.

Wooten drove in a third of Harwich’s 12 total runs scored in the series. He batted .304 over the course of the entire 2011 playoffs.

Wooten is a junior at East Carolina University, where he has earned a reputation as a power hitter. He was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team in 2010. Wooten is a Cape League veteran, having played for Harwich last summer as well as in 2011.
