Heritage Plantation hosts Baseball by the Beach exhibit
SANDWICH -- Friday, June 14 isn't the only Opening Day on the 2002 schedule for the Cape Cod Baseball League -- just a month earlier, on May 12, league officials and former players will be on hand to see the grand opening of Heritage Plantation of Sandwich in Sandwich, MA. The opening on Mother's Day, which will be a celebration of the museum opening year-round, will boast the opening day of the exhibit, Baseball by the Beach: the story of the Cape Cod Baseball League and Hall of Fame.
Memorabilia, memories and Cape League moments captured in time will be at the forefront of this weekend's opening of the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame at Heritage Plantation, Sandwich.

"We're very excited that Heritage Plantation will open its gates on Mother's Day and the Cape League is honored to be a part of this special grand opening which celebrates the first-ever year round opening of the museum," said League President Judy Walden Scarafile.
Included in the exhibit are items from former Cape and current major league players and Hall of Fame inductees. Items include plenty of old pictures, gloves, balls and other baseball memorabilia dating back to the 1880s. Also on display will be a reproduction of the July 4, 1885 poster promoting a game between Sandwich and Barnstable, which is on display in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.
Steve Hatch, the assistant curator of history of the museum added that "the exhibit will convey the feeling of stepping back in time to an old-time baseball game."
The exhibit will be housed in a room dedicated to the Cape League's boys of summer in the museum's newly renovated and renamed American History museum.
Prior to the opening on Sunday, there will be an opening ceremony, which will include a short speech by Scarafile and league commissioner, Bob Stead. Those invited include museum lenders, local politicians and supporters of the museum.
"We're all very excited about the display," said League commissioner Bob Stead. "The whole museum opening weekend will be great and is a nice tribute to all those who have been associated with the league over the years."
Saturday night is a special reception for the members of the museum.
