CAPE LEAGUE BOASTS 190 ALUMNI
Performing in Major League Baseball in 2003
CAPE COD, Mass. – A record 190 former Cape Cod Baseball League standouts performed on Major League Baseball rosters during the 2003 season. The total increased by seven from 2002 when it was 183.
The Cotuit Kettleers led the way with 35 former players in major league baseball this past season, while the Chatham A’s were second with 25 and the Hyannis Mets third with 24. The Wareham Gateman (23) and Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (21) round out the top five teams boasting major league baseball players.
The remaining Cape League teams included Orleans Cardinals (19), Brewster Whitecaps (18), Brewster Whitecaps (16), Bourne Braves (16), Falmouth Commodores (14), and Harwich Mariners (10).
The breakdown included 107 active position players from four-year colleges, 74 active pitchers from four-year colleges, one active hitter from junior college, one active JUCO pitcher, plus seven inactive players from four-year colleges.
The 107 active position players equal 43% of the 251 major league baseball hitters who entered professional baseball from a four-year college. The 74 active pitchers from the CCBL represent 29% of the 258 active MLB pitchers.
The Boston Red Sox led major league teams with 10 former Cape League players on their roster in 2003, including Kevin Millar (Harwich ’92), Todd Walker (Brewster ’92), Nomar Garciaparra (Orleans ’93), Bill Mueller (Bourne ’92), Jason Varitek (Hyannis ’91/’93), Scott Williamson (Chatham ’96), Jason Giambi (Bourne ’94), Doug Mirabelli (Hyannis ’90), Lou Merloni (Bourne’91/Cotuit ‘92) and Dave McCarty (Cotuit ‘’89).
JUDY SCARAFILE NAMED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF NACSB
CCBL President Judy Walden Scarafile has been elected executive director of the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball for 2004. The NACSB, which held its annual meeting at the American Baseball Coaches Convention in San Antonio two weeks ago, is an organization consisting of the 10 NCAA-sanctioned college summer leagues. Scarafile, who has served as president of the Cape League for the past 13 years, became the first woman elected to the CCBL Hall of Fame last November.
GREG KING NAMED HYANNIS METS FIELD MANAGER
The Hyannis Mets have announced the hiring of new field manager Greg King for the 2004 CCBL season. King, who will be entering his eighth season as head coach at Thomas College in Waterville, Maine, has held assistant coaching positions in the Cape League with Harwich, Yarmouth-Dennis, and most recently with Cotuit in 2003.
King replaces former Mets’ head coach Keith Stohr, who departs after four seasons in Hyannis and two seasons as field manager. Stohr has been hired as a full-time scout in the Chicago Cubs’ organization. King led the Thomas College Terriers to NAIA New England titles in 2001 and 2003. He was named the Maine Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in both 1999 and 2000.
A 1991 graduate of the University of Maine and a four-year player in that program, King was an assistant coach for three seasons for the Black Bears while he pursued his Master's Degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from Maine.
CHATHAM, FALMOUTH AND HYANNIS ELECT NEW PRESIDENTS
Cape League franchises have elected new presidents for the Chatham A’s, Falmouth Commodores and Hyannis Mets for 2004.
Arthur Dunn has been elected president of the Chatham A’s, replacing Paul Galop and Peter Troy. As the newly-named president of the Chatham Athletic Association, Dunn spearheads an organization which has grown exponentially since its inception for the betterment of the community and its beloved baseball team, the Chatham A's. Dunn was sworn in as the CAA's new head man this fall. Galop accepted the job as CCBL commissioner, a position which required Galop to cut his internal ties with the A’s.
Darin J. Weeks was recently elected president of the Falmouth Commodores after serving as vice president last season. He will continue as a Free Teamline internet announcer for the Commodores and currently works for the Cape Cod Five Bank and a part-time sports writer for the Falmouth Enterprise.
Geoff Converse is the new president of the Hyannis Mets, replacing Randy Shepard who served in 2003. Converse has been an active board member of the Mets for the past five seasons and is a former GM of the Falmouth Commodores. He is currently director of golf for the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce and is a former sports writer for the Cape Cod Times.
BOURNE BRAVES WINTER FANFEST A SUCCESS
The annual Bourne Braves Winter Fanfest attracted a nice crowd, despite a winter nor’easter on December 6th, 2003. The Master of Ceremonies was Bourne Braves founder and current Mass. Maritime AD and baseball coach Bob Corradi. Participants included former Bourne Braves and current major leaguers Lou Merloni, Boston Red Sox and John McDonald, Cleveland Indians. The evening began a reception and silent auction followed by dinner. Proceeds will go to the Braves’ new ballpark to be constructed at Upper Cape Regional High School.
OLREANS’ ELDREDGE PARK NAMED TOP PARK BY “BASEBALL AMERICA”
Eldredge Park, home of the defending Cape Cod Baseball League champion Orleans Cardinals, has been recognized as the top summer collegiate baseball league park by “Baseball America,” one of the top baseball publications in the country. In addition, 40% of the four year college players identified in “Baseball America’s 2003 Top 30 prospects list that entered pro baseball performed in the CCBL.
