Hyannis Mets and Y-D Red Sox to Battle for
Nantucket Pennant Game Trophy

NANTUCKET--- For the third straight season, the Hyannis Mets will host a game at picturesque Tom Nevers Field on Nantucket Island.

The Mets, who split with the Falmouth Commodores during the past two summers, will entertain the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, Saturday June 26 at 2 p.m., in the Nantucket Pennant Game.

"It’s the third year we've been over there on Nantucket, and it’s proven to be successful,” said Hyannis Mets general manager John Howitt. “The players look forward to it. In fact, many of the players' parents schedule their visits to make the trip to Nantucket. Quite a number of our players, particularly those from the Midwest, have never seen the ocean before, and it’s quite a thrill for them to go over on the ferry.”

Larry Maury and the Nantucket Babe Ruth program will co-host the game with the Mets at Nevers Field, a beautiful baseball complex overseeing the Atlantic Ocean next to the old Navy Yard.

“For the third consecutive year, the Hyannis Mets of the Cape Cod Baseball League have elected to play one of their home games on our Island as a fund-raiser for Nantucket Babe Ruth Baseball,” said Maury. “This year their opponents are the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Co- sponsored by the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce and Nantucket Babe Ruth Baseball, today's event would not be possible without the help of Tracy Bakalar of the Chamber, John Garner of the Mets and our group of volunteers from Nantucket Babe Ruth Baseball. The Cape Cod Baseball league is known as one of the premier summer leagues in the country with players hailing from colleges across the nation. Many of its most talented players have been sent to the majors. So enjoy the game and keep a sharp eye: you might just be watching a future baseball star playing on our Island turf.”

Prior to the game the Y-D Red Sox will host a Babe Ruth clinic at Nevers Field, while the Mets host a Little League clinic at the double field complex on Nantucket.

Sponsors for the event include A.K Diamonds Restaurant, Hy-Line Cruises and Nantucket Bank.

Players, coaches, umpires, volunteers and fans will be traveling to the game on the Great Point Ferry, and will be returning on both the Great Point and Grey Lady. The Nantucket Chamber of Commerce has scheduled buses for transportation from the docks to the field and back again after the game. Buses will pick up the teams and host volunteers at 11 am and then parents and fans at noon and then 1 p.m. They will also begin taking the teams and fans back to the docks after the game. -- Courtney Reilly, Hyannis Mets Intern, 2004
