Brazelton Receives Tony C. Award
Former Harwich Mariners (’99) pitcher Dewon Brazelton of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays was honored with the Tony Conigliaro Award at the Boston Baseball Writers annual awards dinner in January. A former first round draft pick of the Devils Rays in 2001, he has overcome personal adversity during his life.
The Tony C. Award is given annually to the player who best overcomes an obstacle and continues to thrive through the adversity. Conigliaro was a slugging outfielder with the Boston Red Sox in the 1960’s until hit by a Jack Hamilton pitch in August, 1967. Tony returned to the lineup in 1969 and hit 20 home runs, slammed a career–high 36 HR in 1970, but retired due to impaired eyesight. Conigliaro died in 1990, eight years after a heart attack and the award has been given annually in honor of his life.
Other Tony C. award winners include former Red Sox pitcher Brett Saberhagen and former Cape Leaguers Mike Lowell (Chatham ’94) of the Florida Marlins and Jim Mecir (Falmouth ’90) of the Oakland A’s.
