Y-D Red Sox 2005 Season Preview SOUTH YARMOUTH, Mass.- Isn’t it interesting in the same year the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox win the Cape Cod Baseball League championship, the Boston Red Sox end their 86- year draught? Coincidence? --- I think not! The Cape League defending champions, the Y-D Red Sox, are back to defend their title. After coming off arguably the best Cape League championship game in history, defeating Falmouth 8-4 in an 11-inning marathon, the Sox are back with some familiar faces, as well as some new talent to defend their crown. Returning for the Sox is Adam Davis (Florida). Davis boasted some impressive numbers for the Sox, last year hitting .268 with 14 stolen bases. Also returning for the Sox is Nick Moresi (Fresno State). Moresi hit .667 in 2004 with the Sox and promises to bring a lot to the table in 2005. Returning to the pitching staff is southpaw Corey VanAllen (Baylor). VanAllen boasted a 2.43 ERA in 11 games for the Sox, allowing only 22 hits. Adding to the already talented pool of returning players is a new crop that is shaping up to be just as solid as last year’s champions. Chris Errecat (Cal-Berkley) will give strength to the infield as well as the outfield. Errecat hit .256 with three home runs and 19 RBI’s in 2004 for the Golden Bears. Strengthening the pitching staff this year will be Joshua Butler (San Diego). Right-handed Butler went 3-2 with a 4.96 ERA in 2004 and as a freshman made more appearances than any other USD pitcher. Rounding out the pitching staff for the defending champs are right-handers Nolan Gallagher (Stanford), Brandon Morrow (California), Brad Rulon (Georgia Tech), Michael Stutes (Santa Clara), southpaws Eric Berger (Arizona), Sean Land (Kansas), and T.J. Sinovich (Arkansas)and Hoping to add to the championship team are infielders Bryan Henry (Florida State.), Brock Bond (Arkansas), and Brian Kervin (Arizona). At third base is Braedyn Pruitt (Stetson), and joining the Sox in the outfield is Jim Rapoport (Stanford). Back for his seventh season with the Sox is Coach Scott Pickler of Cypress College. Pickler was named “National Coach of the Year” three times. Also, joining the coaching staff this year is assistant coach Chris Podeszwa from UCONN. The Sox begin their quest for a repeat Thursday, June 16 at home against Hyannis. Stefanie Falco, 2005 CCBL Intern John Garner, Jr. |
