Saturday, 28 July 2007

WAREHAM, Mass.—After finishing the Cape Cod Baseball League season as league championship finalists, the Wareham Gatemen will host the 2007 CCBL All-Star Game on Saturday, July 28 beginning at 6 p.m. at Spillane Field.

For the first time in seven years, the Gatemen will host the Cape League’s midsummer classic, a game that annually attracts over 5,000 fans and 100 major league scouts and media.

After experiencing almost six years of drainage trouble, added to the dried-up infield due to the clay placed on the mound and home plate area, the Gatemen have re-constructed nearly the entire field. Placing a new irrigation system in the outfield along with a re-sodded infield has sparked interest and anticipation for the new season across the Cape.

The Gatemen also won the rights to introducing a well in the area, “This addition will save the nearby schools up to $10,000 annually in expenses,” says Gatemen GM John Wylde.

The Gatemen also built metal fences to cover both the home and away dugouts to help prevent injuries. The electrical lines down the right field foul pole have now been placed underground, in addition to, a newly-constructed system.

“The three outages last season sparked reason for change,” said Wylde.
The CCBL All-Star Game will be preceded by the popular home run hitting contest, infield and hitting practice by both teams and an autograph signing session with the fans.

Increasing exposure with the newly renovated ballpark, the Gatemen, are once again hosts to the annual Baseball Factory High School All-Star Classic. The game will be played Friday, July 27 at Spillane Field, the day before the Cape League All-star game calling for a fan-favorite weekend of great baseball.
