Mid-Season Report

As we hit the halfway point in the 2009 season, the big story has been the weather. During the 2006 season, we set a record when we needed to reschedule 32 games. We thought that was something we might never encounter again. Wrong!

Halfway through this season we have had to reschedule 53 games due to rain fog, unsafe field conditions and in some cases filed availability. Let’s hope this trend will not continue through the second half of the season. As it stands now, we have scheduled 17 doubleheaders which are also unprecedented. Everyone understands that we can do nothing about the weather, and the cooperation of all teams in rescheduling these games is typical Cape Cod Baseball League positive behavior, that is, whatever it takes!

Speaking of baseball, parity again has appeared on our diamonds as all ten teams are certainly in the thick of pennant races with most teams having modest winning and losing streaks, thus keeping everyone bunched fairly tightly. No one team is running away from the pack or falling too far behind. It should be fun down the stretch as we have added two more teams to our playoff format this year, taking the number of play-off bound teams to six.

The excitement is mounting about our annual All-Star Game that will be held at Fenway Park this year for the first time in over 20 years. The date is Thursday, July 23rd. Tickets are only $10 for general seating, which means first-come, first-served in seat selection. You could be close to the dugout for $10 at Fenway Park! A great opportunity that is rare. The gates open to the public at 3PM with game time at 7PM sharp, carried live on NESN. You will not want to miss batting practice or the Home Run Hitting Contest which is always a crowd favorite. Tickets are available from any CCBL team or go to www.redsox.com as well.

We are most appreciative of everyone’s patience while we battle through the weather but rest assured we will play all of these games and the playoffs will be as exciting as ever. There is no shortage of exceptional talent in the League this year and as we gain play-off momentum we expect a fantastic finish. Not a bad form of entertainment for the whole family, for free!

Thank you for your continued support of the Cape Cod Baseball League and we are looking forward to seeing you around the Cape and at Fenway Park on July 23rd. Best wishes!
