Falmouth Commodores 2009 Season Review

Commodores Finish behind the Eight Ball, Despite Impressive Collection of Talent

By Jim Chandley, CCBL Intern

FALMOUTH, Mass.—This year’s Falmouth Commodores sent five players to the Cape Cod League All-Star Game at Fenway. They were secondly only to Y-D in that department. The only difference was the Y-D went to the semi-finals and Falmouth went home.

Despite a disappointing finish, there were some definite payers to watch in Falmouth this season. Hunter Morris (Auburn) was second in the league in homeruns, knocking eight out of the yard including a moon shoot that one observer at Guv Fuller Field claimed went over 500 feet.

Taylor Wall (Rice) and Patrick Cooper (Bradley) both pitched inspired ball for the team. Cooper struck out 39 batters in only 27 innings. Wall posted a 2.26 ERA on the season and through a complete-game shutout. B.A. Vollmuth (Southern Miss) played shortstop for only 28 games but hit five homeruns and drove in 18 runs.

But only one young man was the center of attention in Falmouth in 2009. Todd Cunningham (Jacksonville State) or Cape Todd, as he came to be know, was the main attraction. Todd hit .378 on the year and flirted with .400 on the final week of the season. He reached base almost every other time he stepped to the plate, a .458 on-base percentage. Cunningham also slugged an even .500, meaning that he averaged half a base per plate appearance. If you do the math, that means that in the course of an average game, he at least reaches second.

Cunningham was presented with the Thurman Munson Batting Title and the Pro Prospect award at the final home game of the Commodores season. The Pro Prospect award is especially distinguished because it is the only award voted on by the scouts who attend Cape League Games. It brands Cunningham as the most likely player to succeed in professional baseball from this year’s Cape League Class.

Dan Dunn said at the beginning of the season that Falmouth expects to make the playoffs every year. “We didn’t get it done this year, but the beautiful thing is that there’s always next year,” said Dunn on the final day of the regular season. And indeed, Falmouth will be back next year.
