A Rainy Start to Season

With the conclusion of Friday night’s Cape Cod Baseball League games, each of the league's 10 teams should already have played three games apiece. But that's not the case. Rain and the havoc wreaked on field conditions have led to the postponement of seven of the first 15 games of this season, a league record.

Last summer, a total of just 20 Cape League games were moved due to weather or field conditions. In a matter of three days, the 2013 season has already lost more than a third of last year’s total.

No team has been affected more than the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, who have yet to play a single game this season. Even more astounding is that the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox are the only team to have played all of their first three scheduled games.

While players and fans alike are disappointed by the slow start to the season, the rainouts aren't all bad. It's no secret that Cape Cod is much more populous later in the summer; thus, the more games in late June and July, the higher total attendance (and higher revenue) for each team.

Another benefit is that the teams will have more opportunities to compete with full rosters, as the lineups during the first couple of weeks often feature temporary players, thanks in large part to the numerous elite players still participating in the College World Series.
