6/24: Cape Cod Baseball League Sunday Wrap-up

Sunday was a busy day for the Cape League to round out the second week of the season.

Falmouth (4-8) at Brewster (3-9-1)

Game One

A fourth inning rally that Falmouth put together made the difference in the first leg of the series, winning 7-2. The Commodores scrapped together three runs in on four hits, including two doubles, and an error (one of four for Brewster) to break a 1-1 tie to make it 4-1. Brewster was able bring home a run to make it 4-2 in the bottom half of the inning, but was shut down the rest of the game due to a good start and relief pitching by Falmouth. They were able to tack on three more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Game Two

Falmouth was able to complete the sweep of the series against the Whitecaps, winning the second leg 5-3. Falmouth collected two runs in the second, one in the third, and two in the sixth, all while keeping Brewster to no runs. This was until the bottom of the seventh where they strung together four hits with two outs to score their only runs of the game. Brewster again had trouble in the field after commiting three errors, making it seven total errors for Brewster in the doubleheader.

Wareham (9-5) at Yarmouth-Dennis (6-5-2)

Game One

Yarmouth-Dennis surrendered ten hits and three errors to the Gatemen. Wareham put together four multi-run innings, including scoring eight runs in the stretch of three innings. Y-D put together a three run sixth inning of their own after scoring just one run up to that point. At that point, it was just too late, dropping game one 10-4.

Game Two

Yarmouth-Dennis was able to rally and split with Wareham, completing a close comeback win late in game two. Both offenses were held at bay almost the entire game. Wareham scored one in the fourth and fifth to take a 2-0 lead into the sixth. This is when Y-D was able to pick up three of their six hits on the night to score four runs, to take a 4-2 lead. Wareham crossed one in the top of the seventh, but could not tie it up, losing a tightly contested 4-3 ball game.

Bourne (6-6-1) at Harwich (7-5-1)

Game One

Harwich completed a combined no-hitter against Bourne, and got offensive help just in time to seal it, winning 1-0. Bourne’s starter Casey Legumina had a stellar performances that shouldn’t be overlooked, pitching five innings of five-hit, no run baseball. Harwich scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Zach Watson reached on an error, and after advancing to second on a passed ball, Watson was able to score on a single from Tanner Morris.

Game Two

Bourne and Harwich could not decide a winner in the second leg, ending the game in a ninth inning 1-1 tie, and the Mariners leaving with the only victory of the day. Harwich scored their lone run in the first, and Bourne scored theirs in the fifth. Both ball clubs had terrific outings from their pitchers in both game one and game two.

Hyannis (7-4-1) at Orleans (4-8)

Game One

Hyannis was able to hold Orleans down in the this one, taking the first leg 7-3. A four-run second inning helped the Hawks cruise to the finish. Michael Barefoot and Kyle Wilkie both added two RBI to the seven run effort, and Alec Trela hit a The lineup produced well from top to bottom, and solid pitching helped win the first game.

Game Two

It took an extra inning to decide the second game. Hyannis scored on in the top of the eighth and held the Firebirds in the bottom of the inning to wrap up the day and head home with a sweep. Both teams had five hits but were separated by just one run. Both of Orleans’ runs came off the bat of JJ Bleday, including a solo home run. All three runs for Hyannis came from three solo home runs, including two from pinch hitter Todd Lott.   The final score was 3-2 Hyannis.

Cotuit (7-5) at Chatham (6-4-2)

Cotuit was able to hold Chatham to one run on five hits while they were able to score six runs on five hits. Cotuit had an unbelievable start by John Baker, who went six innings and allowed no runs on four hits, striking out five and walking not one Angler. Cotuit scored one in the first to get things started. They tacked on one more in the fifth, and rallied for four in the seventh. Chatham scored their only run in the final frame and ended the night with a 6-1 loss.  The second game of the day was fogged out and will be rescheduled to a future date.
