As the nation’s premier summer college baseball league gets back underway, here are 10 exciting prospects, one from each team, that figure to make waves during the Cape League’s 2019 campaign.

Alec Burleson, P, Bourne: The East Carolina Pirate is one of the most dynamic two-way players coming to the Cape this summer. This spring, Burleson posted a 6-2 record with 68 strikeouts in 60.1 innings on the mound. He also enjoyed a breakout year at the plate, hitting .370 with 9 homers and 61 RBIs.

Gage Workman, IF, Brewster: A returner from 2018, Workman started every game for Arizona State in the spring, posting a .330 average, hitting 8 home runs and swiping 9 bases. Workman earned an honorable mention for both the All-Pac-12 team and the All-Pac-12 defensive team.

Spencer Torkelson, 1B/OF, Chatham: Torkelson, another Arizona State Sun Devil, tore up the Cape League last summer, hitting .333 with 7 home runs and going toe-to-toe with college teammate Hunter Bishop in the home run derby. Torkelson did not slow down at all in the spring, hitting .351 and launching 23 home runs.

Nick Gonzalez, IF, Cotuit: The infielder from New Mexico State led all of the NCAA with a .432 batting average in the spring. He added 16 homers and 80 RBIs, which was good for fourth in the nation. After spending the end of the 2018 season with the Kettleers, Gonzales will be a big part of Cotuit’s team for 2019.

Hayden Cantrelle, IF, Falmouth: A member of the Ragin’ Cajuns at Louisiana-Lafayette and a second-year Commodore, Cantrelle was a menace on the basepaths, swiping 28 bags while only being caught four times. Cantrelle also hit .309 while leading the team with 15 doubles and slugging over .500.

Joe Boyle, P, Harwich: 2018’s top prospect in the Northwoods League returns to the Cape for the summer of 2019 after spending some time in Cotuit last summer. Standing 6’7, Boyle features a fastball that sits in the high-90s and struck out 39 batters in 25.2 innings at Notre Dame this spring.

Trevor Hauver, OF, Hyannis: Hauver returns for a second summer with the Harbor Hawks after a breakout sophomore campaign at Arizona State. Hauver’s average jumped over 100 points, from .227 as a freshman to .339 as a sophomore. He added 13 homers and 50 RBIs after going without a longball his entire freshman campaign.

Jared Leins, P, Orleans: Leins stands out among Cape Leaguers not only for his 6’6 frame, but also due to the fact that he pitches for the United States Naval Academy. The former Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American went 3-1 in 13 starts as a sophomore for the Midshipmen, striking out 73 batters in 71.2 innings while walking just 20 batters.

Darren Baker, IF, Wareham: The son of MLB legend Dusty Baker, Darren has been making a name for himself as a dynamic player for the Cal Golden Bears. In his sophomore campaign, Baker hit .304 and swiped 20 bags without being caught once. While starting all 51 games for Cal, Baker was only held hitless 8 times.

Austin Wells, C, Y-D: The Arizona Wildcat backstop earned the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year award and was named a Freshman All-American by three major baseball publications. Wells started all 56 games, hitting .353 and compiling a 28 game on-base streak. Wells also made just 6 errors in 423 defensive chances and caught 6 runners stealing on the season.
