HYANNIS, Mass. – After a summer where he guided the Hyannis Harbor Hawks from a worst-to-first season while garnering the Manager of the Year honor, Chad Gassman has been named the new head baseball coach at the University of Pikeville (Ky.).

Gassman had been the head coach at Waldorf College, a NAIA school in Iowa, for the past five years. UPIKE, located in Kentucky, is also a NAIA school.

Gassman is a 2000 graduate of Morehead State University, where he was a member of the university's baseball team. After assistant coaching stops at Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University and Young Harris (Ga.) College, he has spent five seasons as the head coach at Waldorf. In the 2011 season, Gassman guided the Warriors to a 20-20 mark, their first .500 record in school history.

Gassman has been the field manager for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks since 2009, this year leading them to the Western Division title in the Cape Cod Baseball League with a league-best regular-season record of 29-15.

“I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity the University of Pikeville has given me,” Gassman said. “I'm looking forward to continuing all the hard work the staff has put into place and carrying the Bears' program in the right direction.”

In a press release from the University of Pikeville, athletic director Dr. Reggie Overton said, “We were overwhelmed with the number of talented baseball coaches who applied for our position and feel we've made the right move in bringing Chad here. He's familiar with the NAIA and our situation here, and we look forward to working with him on a daily basis here at Pikeville.”

Gassman, who has been asked to return as head coach of Hyannis next year, has assured team president Tino DiGiovanni that he will be on hand for the 2012 Cape League season.
