Cape League Baseball comes to Sandwich !

SANDWICH, Mass. -- There's lot of excitement in Sandwich, Massachusetts these days as the Cape Cod Baseball League is coming to town, Monday, June 24. Presented by The Community Bank, the Hyannis Mets will host the Bourne Braves at Sandwich High School's Fenton Field at 7 pm.

The "Cape League Baseball Comes to Sandwich" committee has been working since last fall with the Hyannis Mets and CCBL officials to make this game happen.

"We're very excited to have both the Bourne Braves and Hyannis Mets play here in Sandwich. Several members of the community have worked diligently to make this event a success including Dick Judge, Barbara Lennon, Lance Lambros, Marty Cosgrove and John Tanionos," said Debra Woodman, chair, Sandwich Visitors Services Board. "We are very grateful to the Hyannis Mets and the Bourne Braves. It's an exciting opportunity for Sandwich and a great way for children to kick-off the summer season with their families and an opportunity "not to miss" for visitors.

"The Mets are excited that the folks in Sandwich have invited us to play under the lights on such a well-maintained field," said Hyannis Mets President, Bill Bussiere. "This is an opportunity for players from both teams to perform before a big crowd at night. The American Legion and Sandwich High School teams have done a great job maintaining this first-class facility."

"The Cape League is contagious - where else can you go to a ball game for free, get a great seat and up close and personal with the future stars of Major League Baseball, " said Bourne Braves President, Lynn Ladetto. "For those in Sandwich that have never gotten to see a Cape League game, what better time to go? There's nothing like watching a Cape League game under the lights. The energy is incredible, ballplayers live for it and fans are welcome to cheer them on. The relationships players form with host families and other players and the lasting friendships are something they will never forget."

Before the game, from 5-6 pm, the Hyannis Mets will host a free youth clinic for Sandwich Little Leaguers. The Sandwich High School Boosters Club will run the concession stand, while Project Sail will sell food in the stands. There will be no admission charge for the game, but donations will be accepted. There will also be a 50-50 raffle. A percentage of the profits from the game will go to maintain and improve the playing fields in Sandwich.

The committee is excited that the game will be televised, tape delay, on Sandwich Community Television and made available to Adelphia Cablevision and Cape Cod Community Television. The U.S. Army Color Guard will be on hand to perform during the playing of the national anthem. Other surprises and special "happenings" are being planned, including a corporate night for Eye Health Services and a sampling of new products by Coca Cola of Cape Cod.

A special souvenir program for the game is currently available for sale at the following locations in Sandwich: Plymouth Savings Bank (Sandwich), Barrett's Spirits, The Community Bank (Sandwich), The Deli, Charlie's Barber Shop, Rockland Trust (Sandwich), Agway, Sandwich Pizza House and Fred O' Earle's Oil Co. on 6A.

Programs are also available at Heritage Plantation of Sandwich. Don't miss their exciting new exhibit this year, "Baseball by the Beach"! In celebration of the exhibit and the game, the Plantation is also sponsoring baseball clinics on Tuesday, June 25 and Thursday, June 27.

The Mets and Braves are West Division rivals in the Cape League, with Bourne qualifying for the playoffs last season and Hyannis playing for the league championship in 2000 before losing to Brewster in the final game. Both teams are managed by first-year head coaches: Keith Stohr of Hyannis and Matt Noone of Bourne.

The "Cape League Baseball Comes to Sandwich" Committee includes Tanionos and Woodman, co-chairs; Judge, Lambros, Bussiere, Peter Scarafile, John Garner and Kathryn Siranosian. For information about the game or game-day sponsorships, please call Debra Woodman at The Community Bank at 508-833-5111.
