Records Tumble Monday Night in the Cape League

The longest game in the modern era of the Cape League occurred Monday night when the Harwich Mariners outlasted the Orleans Cardinals, 3-2, in 20 innings before 4,615 fans at Eldredge Park.

The league curfew of not being able to begin an inning after 11:30 pm was waived because of the playoff implications by the league commissioner's office. The marathon lasted five hours and 52 minutes before Harwich finally pushed across a run in the top of the 20th inning and second baseman Tug "McGraw" Hulett recorded the save in his first collegiate mound appearance.

The longest previous game was 18 innings with Orleans at Wareham on June 20, 1999, in a game which took five hours and 14 minutes. In that game, Lance Niekro, son of former 20-game winner Joe Niekro and nephew of Hall of Famer Phil Niekro, earned the save.

On the other end of the Cape, pitcher Jeff Gogal of Falmouth finally gave up an earned run after 41.2 innings, after surrendering a long home run and two-run single to All-Star shortstop Andy LaRoche of Wareham, fresh off the injured list. The Commodores swept a rare day-night doubleheader over the Gatemen, 5-3 and 6-5. - John Garner, CCBL Director of Public Relations & Broadcasting
