CCBL Executive Committee Meeting Held At Heritage 

SANDWICH – Newly named Executive Director, Dr. Scott Swank of Heritage Museums & Gardens has invited the Cape Cod Baseball League for a private showing of the CCBL Hall of Fame for those attending the next CCBL Executive Committee meeting on Thursday, December 15.

     Committee members will arrive for the 6 p.m. meeting in the Round Barn’s first-floor board room, followed by an official tour of the History Building where the Hall of Fame is housed. Beginning at 8 p.m., the members will walk the grounds and enjoy the Spectacle of Lights.

     “I’m delighted Heritage was able to do all of this for us,” said CCBL President Judy Walden Scarafile. We’re excited about holding our meeting, a tour of our Hall of Fame, and then witness the Spectacle of Lights. This will be a fun 3-in-1 evening for everyone concerned.”

     In other Hall of Fame news, the deadline for nominations for the 2006 class is March 31. They can be sent to committee chair Phil Edwards or any member of the Hall of Fame Committee.

     The January meeting of the Executive Committee is set for Monday, January 9 (backup date January 18) at Shepley Wood Products’ Marvin Showroom. The last two meetings have been held at the Comfort Inn after the Ramada Inn was closed due to renovations.

Cape League Announces Officers For 2006
     League officers for 2006: Judy Walden Scarafile, president; Jim Higgins, senior vice president; Phil Edwards and Peter Ford, vice presidents; Kim Wolfe, secretary; Steve Wilson, treasurer and Web site coordinator; Paul Galop, commissioner; Dick Sullivan and Sol Yas, deputy commissioners.

2006 League Schedule To Be Approved
     Schedule committee chair Bill Bussiere of the Hyannis Mets will present the 2006 CCBL schedule for approval at this week’s league meeting. It will be available later this month on the league Web site, www.capecodbaseball.org. Opening Day is scheduled for June 15. 

Cape League On The Road In January
     A contingent of league and team officials will head to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Convention on January 5-8 at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago. The league will once again sponsor a booth at the convention’s trade show.
     Several league officers, team officials, and media are expected to attend the popular Boston Baseball Writers Dinner January 12. Current Red Sox catcher and captain Jason Varitek (Hyannis '91/'93) and new Sox third baseman Mike Lowell (Chatham '94) will receive their 2005 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards.
     The CCBL will sponsor a booth at the Mohegan Sun World Baseball Coaches' Convention in Uncasville, Conn., on January 12-14. Presenters include Joe Girardi, Dwight Evans, Harold Reynolds, Brian Butterfield, Don Cooper, Steve Ontiveros, Mike Barnett, George Poulis, Karl Kuehl, Rod Delmonico and Turtle Thomas, Robbie Wine, and Kevin O'Sullivan.

Orleans Cardinals Boast Six Alumni On Wallace Watch List
     The 2006 Preseason Wallace Watch List (Brooks Wallace Award for college Player of the Year) has been posted by the College Baseball Foundation at its Web site, www.collegebaseballfoundation.org. The 120 names include several CCBL alumni, including six Orleans Cardinals – Colin Curtis, Greg Dowling, Tyler Chambliss, Steven Wright, Brett Pill, and Chris Pettit.

Hyannis Mets Present Downeast Flavor In 2006
     The Hyannis Mets have announced three players who hail from the Portland, Maine, area, including returning sophomore southpaw holdover Charlie Furbush (St. Joseph’s-ME), freshman right-handed pitcher Ryan Reid (James Madison) and freshman first baseman Ryan Flaherty (Vanderbilt), son of former Cape Leaguer and current Southern Maine head coach Ed Flaherty. Furbush led the Mets in innings pitched, starts and strikeouts in 2005.

Around the Horn
     A new CCBL Code of Conduct has been approved by the league’s executive board and will go into effect for the 2006 season…The annual March of Dimes Telerama at Cape Cod Community College is slated for Sunday, February 19 and will again be emceed by deputy commissioner Dick Sullivan. The CCBL will answer the pledge phones during the last hour, 9 to 10 p.m.…Deputy sports editor Masayuki Shinoyama pointed out in a feature story in the Japanese paper, NIKKEI, "All the people on Cape Cod seem to be born with DNA to love baseball.”
