Hyannis Mets
2007 Season Review

(20-21-3 – 3rd in West)

HYANNIS, Mass. -- It came down to the next-to-last day of the season, but the Hyannis Mets came up just one point short of the postseason in 2007. An 8-2-1 run at the end of the season put the Mets back into contention, but a loss to Wareham on Aug. 7 prevented a highly anticipated winner-take-all game against Falmouth on the final day of the season.

Hyannis was led at the plate and in the field by Cape Cod Baseball League All-Stars Shane Peterson (Long Beach State) and Dan Brewer (Bradley). Peterson finished fourth in the league in hitting at .337 and put together a league-high 15-game hitting streak, while Brewer hit .297 with seven homers and a team-high 30 RBI. Returning slugger James Darnell (South Carolina) slammed eight homers for the Mets, not including an opposite-field blast in the All-Star Game. Mets outfielders Phil Bell (Alabama-Birmingham) and Joey Gonzales (California-Riverside) also made key contributions throughout the season.

The Mets settled into a strong starting rotation by midseason. Matt Daly (Hawaii), who led the team with 46 strikeouts, provided the season highlight with a no-hitter of the Wareham Gatemen on July 25.

Andrew Doyle (Oklahoma) was the most consistent starter for Hyannis, going 4-1 with a 2.83 ERA and a complete game shutout. Bryce Stowell (California-Irvine) was named the league's Pitcher of the Week after striking out eight hitters in seven innings against Chatham on July 11. Jason Franzblau (Winthrop) improved on the hill as the season progressed, finishing with a 4-3 record and a 3.50 ERA. Daly and Austin Hudson (Central Florida) led the team with eight starts apiece.

The Mets were also strong in the bullpen, led by closer Tyler Stohr (North Florida), son of former Mets manager Keith Stohr. The younger Stohr's five saves earned him a spot in the Cape League All-Star Game, where he pitched a perfect third inning. Late in the season, the relief pitching of Stephen Penney (California-Riverside), James Jolicoeur (California-Northridge), Garrett Sherrill (Appalachian State) and Hunter Harris (Texas) helped the Mets to a number of key wins.

First baseman Kiko Vazquez (Central Florida) won two extra-inning road games for the Mets with 10th-inning home runs. His second such feat occurred in Cotuit and clinched the Barnstable Patriot Cup, awarded to the winner of the season series between the town’s two teams.

At the final home game of the season, Mets catcher Shea Robin (Vanderbilt) was honored as recipient of the Daniel J. Silva Sportsmanship Award, voted on by the league's umpires.
