Cape League Draws a Crowd in Sandwich

SANDWICH, Mass. – An unfamiliar site for many drew an attendance of over 1,800 people Monday night as Sandwich High School’s Fenton Field hosted a Cape Cod Baseball League match-up between the Falmouth Commodores and the host Bourne Braves.

Since 2002, Sandwich has been the annual spot for a Cape League regular season match-up. This was usually the case when the Hyannis Mets took the field, as they have for the past four years, and hosted every other team in the West Division.

This was the first year Hyannis was not host at the neutral site. Drawing a crowd of fresh faces and increasing the Cape League’s exposure is the general consensus amongst the committee that coordinates the event every year. Judy Scarafile, long-time president of the CCBL, commented on the love for baseball that is found in the heart, adding “that it is only proper to bring the Cape League to [new fans], not to mention the good that can come out of seeing someone new.”

Major sponsors found at the game included The Community Bank. Dave Curtis, president of The Community Bank, and his passionate employees have been involved with the event since the beginning of the annual Sandwich game, serving as a presenting sponsor. Curtis commented on how fond he is of the league and what it brings to both the bank and the Sandwich community in hosting the game. Falmouth assistant GM Dan Dunn saw the Sandwich field as being fan-friendly and was proud to be a part of the annual game.

In addition to sponsorship by The Community Bank, the U.S. Army was in attendance and welcomed fans with a rock-climbing wall as they entered the park. The Army has built a great relationship with the Cape League over the years, bringing attractions like their signature wall to parks across the Cape. Because the Braves were the home team in Monday night’s game, their souvenir stands were found alongside the concessions tables affiliated with the Sandwich community.

The game featured a pitching duel between Braves RHP Tom Farmer (Akron) and Commodores LHP Cory Luebke (Ohio). Farmer pitched strongly in the defeat, lasting 6 2/3 innings and giving up one run on five hits with 10 strikeouts.

The sole run was surrendered with two outs in the sixth and a full count to Commodores CF Warren McFadden (Tulane), who delivered his third home run of the young season to center field. One run was all Luebke needed in his second win of the season, lasting six innings and allowing four hits while striking out nine. Luebke has yet to give up a run in two starts while holding opposing batters to just five hits.

Fenton Field is the home of the Sandwich High School baseball team as well as the Post 188 American Legion team. Revenues generated during the annual game were split between the home team and the Sandwich field maintenance committee.
