CAPE COD, Mass. - Now that the 2011 season of the Cape Cod Baseball League has begun, the team broadcasters are getting into the swing of things.
Broadcast interns, like the players on each team, come from all over the country to pursue their interests in baseball and explore possible future careers in communications, public relations and broadcast journalism.
This summer’s crop of interns arrived on the Cape last week from colleges including Northwestern, Penn State, Ithaca, Oregon, George Mason, Wisconsin, Rutgers, Curry College, Seton Hall, Syracuse and Missouri.
Some, like Tom Quilan, a rising junior at Curry, are fulfilling a lifelong dream to work with the Cape League. Tom, who is representing the Orleans Firebirds in his first year, claims that he strives to be a bit “off key” in his broadcasting approach by finding common ground with the players, making it easier to “tell a story” rather than just rattle off stats.
Quilan said he is focusing on developing relationships with players so they’ll remember him when they get to the Major Leagues. Hopefully, they may cross career paths again.
“The focus should always be on the players, not the broadcasters, said Quinlan.
“But this summer Cape League broadcasting interns are making history themselves, since for the first time their ranks include women.
Laura Pogulis from Rutgers is providing play-by-play for Orleans, while Lisa Pride is broadcasting Wareham Gateman games, the same team on which her husband is an assistant coach.
John Garner, the Cape League’s public relations /broadcast director, remarked at a meeting last week this is an exciting step forward for the League, as historically women have not been involved in the play-by-play broadcasting aspect of baseball,
Of course, women have been very successful in the Cape League and accepted in the world of sports as demonstrated by Judy Walden Scarafile, the president of the Cape Cod Baseball League since 1991 who began her career there as an official scorer in the early 1970’s while a student at UConn.
Technology is becoming increasingly important for the League’s public relations volunteers who also give play by play on the internet and expand their audience via social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter.
This year’s group of broadcasters and their knowledge and passion for the sport will undoubtedly ensure another great season for the Cape League.
