Cape Cod Baseball League Benefits from Seaside Lemans Race

HYANNIS, Mass. – The Cape Cod Baseball League was named as one of five beneficiaries of the 2014 Seaside LeMans. This prestigious and renowned fundraiser was established in 2001 by The Davenport Companies and has raised nearly $4 million to help local organizations over the past 13 years.

"Each year, we select at least one organization that will help the youth of Cape Cod. The mentoring and leadership offered by the players and coaches of the Cape League through their Youth Clinics provide a fantastic example of the benefits of hard work, respect and staying focused on a goal. We are excited to assist as they expand their programs to include more kids who may not have had the opportunity to participate in the past.” said DeWitt Davenport, President of The Davenport Companies, founder of Seaside Le Mans - The Race for the Cape Cod Community.

The grant is earmarked to provide more scholarships to the youth clinics that each of the 10 Cape League teams offer from mid- June until late July. The Cape League will be working with several local organizations to spread the word as to how to apply for a scholarship. Information can also be obtained from the League website www.capecodbaseball.org.

During the most recent Bourne Braves winter funraiser event (February 8, 2014), Lou Merloni answered a question about the impact of Cape League players as "role models" and "mentors" for Cape Cod children and their families.

“ We're truly honored and grateful to have been selected as a beneficiary because mentoring and acting as role models are so important to our players and youth”, said CCBl President Judy Walden Scarafile. “The support from Seaside LeMans will enable our teams to have a greater outreach into the community, and that is a win- win for everyone. “

Support Services for Veterans and their Families

The mission of the Cape & Islands Veterans Outreach Center in Hyannis is to provide services and support to veterans from all eras and their families. Originally founded by the NamVets Association in 1983, this organization serves as a portal for veterans' services for Cape Cod and the Islands.  Networking and partnering with key agencies, they assist veterans who are in need of housing, employment, medical or psychological services. Currently offered are counseling programs, claims assistance, access to VA healthcare, a transitional housing program, a food pantry serving over 700 families and a drop-in center for veterans to spend time with fellow veterans. The planned Veterans' Outreach Grace Center in Mashpee will be a general wellness center through which veterans and their families can access accurate identification of the services to facilitate their reintegration into civilian life, be it their physical, psychological, educational, financial or vocational needs. Seaside Le Mans funding will be focused on providing support services for veterans and their families.

Scholarships for Youth Clinics

The Cape Cod Baseball League is the premier college summer league in the nation, dating back to 1885, with 350 players on teams in 10 villages across the Cape. A showcase for Major League scouts, last year's MLB rosters featured 257 players from the Cape League. The league recruits college players from across the country who quickly become part of the Cape community, living with local families and teaching youth clinics during the day. A great immersion into baseball, the clinics are offered by each team at a moderate charge. In addition to the fundamentals and skills of baseball, these college players are also role models, teaching the benefits of hard work, respect and teamwork in a fun environment. The Cape League players are very accessible after their nightly games, much to the delight of their clinic "students" who often attend with their parents to cheer on their mentors. Seaside Le Mans funding will be focused on providing scholarships for youth clinics.

Emergency Center Expansions

The mission of Cape Cod Healthcare is to coordinate and deliver the highest quality, accessible health services, which enhance the health of all Cape Cod residents and visitors. Cape Cod Healthcare has embarked upon expansion projects at the Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital emergency departments in order to significantly improve patient comfort, access and flow. Upon completion, the expanded center at Cape Cod Hospital will contain 54,000 square feet of floor area. Each treatment space will be located within its own exam room and will be large enough to accommodate family members. The Falmouth Hospital expansion project is still in design, but will also add more square footage and private exam rooms. The improvements will also enhance the environment for emergency caregivers. Seaside Le Mans funding will be focused on the expansion of both emergency rooms.

Support for Youth Programs

The mission of the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History is to inspire appreciation, understanding and stewardship of our natural environment through discovery and learning. The Museum integrates the three strands of organizational identity as a museum of natural history, a nature education center, and steward of conservation land through the Stony Brook Sanctuary. Seaside Le Mans funding will be focused on support for youth programs including scholarships for the KidSummer Day Program and local educational outreach programs.

Cape Cod Regional Substance Abuse Prevention Initiative
