THIS WEEK IN THE CAPE LEAGUE
(5 July – 12 June 2008)
Coca Cola Pitcher and Player of the Week
COCA COLA PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Bourne right-hander Bryce Stowell (Cal-Irvine) came within two outs of pitching a complete-game shutout Friday night against Wareham and the performance earned him Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week honors for the seven-day period ending July 12. The 6-2, 205-pound native of La Habra, Calif., now boasts the Cape Cod Baseball League’s lowest ERA – 0.36 – after working 26 innings in which he struck out 31 batters, walked only five and scattered 10 hits. In his 2-0 victory over Wareham, he struck out eight, did not walk a batter and doled out seven hits. Stowell was 8-3 with a 3.26 ERA at Cal-Irvine this spring as a sophomore. In 88.1 innings spread over 16 appearances, he struck out 101 batters and allowed just 36 bases on balls. Last summer, following a redshirt year in college, he compiled a ho-hum 1-5 record with the Hyannis Mets, but showed signs of brilliance by striking out 44 batters in 38.2 innings while walking only 13.
COCA COLA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jimmy Cesario, Falmouth’s cleanup hitter, pounded the ball at a .517 clip during a torrid seven-day batting streak and was named Coca-Cola Player of the Week in the Cape Cod Baseball League. From July 6 through July 12, Cesario (Houston) went 15-for-29 and drove in seven runs. He enjoyed three three-hit games – 3-for-5 against Hyannis, 3-for-4 against Brewster and 3-for-5 against Yarmouth-Dennis – and when the dust had settled, the Commodore second baseman had raised his batting average to .361, eighth best in the league, and had moved into first place in RBI with 21. He’s also second in hits (35) and tied for second in stolen bases (8). In 56 games for Houston this spring, the 5-11, 195-pound junior batted .326 with an impressive .534 slugging percentage and .412 on base percentage. The Cougar senior-to-be homered nine times, drove in 41 runs and was successful on 11 of 14 stolen base attempts.
