28 Former Cape Leaguers Played Major League
Baseball and Now Coach or Manage in the Minors

It happens every summer. Hundreds of college kids descend upon Cape Cod to participate in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Many of them will be drafted by a major league club and be assigned to the minor leagues. Some will eventually make it to the major leagues -- as have more than 735 Cape League alumni who have donned major league uniforms over the years.

Most of the players who visit the Cape to play for a season or two, occasionally even three, move on to other careers. Some may stay in baseball as a manager or coach at the high school or college level, while others may leave baseball behind and start careers unrelated to sports.

Sometimes, it's easy to follow a ballplayer's career after he leaves the Cape. For example, Frank Thomas (Orleans 1988) has had a Hall of Fame career in Major League Baseball. Others may work their way up through the anonymity of the minor leagues and end up as a major league coach or manager -- such as Brian Butterfield, the current bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays, or Bob Schaefer, Joe Torre’s bench coach with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The following list identifies 28 former Cape Cod players who went on to play in the major leagues and now manage or coach in the minors. Someday, you may see these men back in the big leagues as a coach or manager. Take a look and see if you recognize any players that you thought had left the game but may yet reappear on the Major League Baseball stage.

If you know of anyone we have overlooked, please contact us. Remember the criteria: They must have played in both the Cape League and the major leagues and now be coaching or managing in the minors. Can you add to the list?
