COCA COLA PITCHER OF THE WEEK:

Austin WoodCotuit RHP

Cotuit has swept this week’s pair of awards, as Kettleer ace Austin Wood (St. Petersburg) was named Coca Cola Pitcher of the Week for the second time. Wood, who started and threw a scoreless inning for the Western Division in this year’s All-Star game, previously had captured the honor in the fifth week of the season. He earned this week’s award for his win in the opener of Cotuit’s first-round series against Falmouth. Over seven innings, the right-hander allowed one run on four hits, while striking out 10. He has been one of the Cape League’s top performers all season. His 0.74 ERA during the regular season was tied for the league lead with Bourne’s Grayson Garvin(Vanderbilt). Wood was selected in the fourth round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.

COCA COLA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jordan Leyland, Cotuit IF

Jordan Leyland (UC Irvine) completed Cotuit’s sweep by being named Coca Cola Player of the Week. A former temporary player who played his way onto the Cape League All-Star team, Leyland put together a stunning week at the plate, batting .429, while striking out only three times in 28 at-bats. Most impressive about the 6-5 Leyland was his clutch hitting come playoff time. In the opener on August 6th, he went 2-for-4, launching a home run, driving in two runs and also scoring two. To help complete the sweep of Falmouth the next day, he had three hits and drove in two runs, including the game-winner with Cotuit down to their final out. He continued the hot streak in the first game of the second-round series against Wareham, reaching safely in each at-bat, with two hits and two walks. Leyland is a sophomore at UC-Irvine, where he batted .301 this past year.
