THIS WEEK IN THE CAPE LEAGUE
(5July – 11 July 2009)
Coca Cola Pitcher and Player of the Week
COCA COLA PITCHER OF THE WEEK:
Jack Armstrong, Wareham RHP
Wareham starter Jack Armstrong (Vanderbilt) has been named this week's Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week. The 6-7 righty earned the honor with a complete game shutout over Hyannis on Monday, July 6. Armstrong shut down a high-powered Mets lineup that had scored a total of 15 runs in their previous two games, pitching the Gatemen to a 4-0 win. Armstrong allowed only two hits while striking out six over seven scoreless
Armstrong is a freshman at Vanderbilt and has only 7.2 innings of collegiate pitching under his belt, making his success against more experienced players in the Cape League even more remarkable. The talented righty was a highly touted recruit out of Jupiter, Florida, and sports a 96 mph fastball with a plus curve. His father, Jack Sr., was a former big leaguer and also pitched for Wareham.
COCA COLA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Todd Cunningham, Falmouth OF
This week's Coca-Cola Player of the Week is Falmouth's Todd Cunningham (Jacksonville State). The Commodore centerfielder had a stellar week at the plate, hitting .474 with nine hits, five runs batted in, a double and a triple. Cunningham has been the ideal leadoff hitter for Falmouth, recording an astounding .600 on-base percentage while still managing to slug .632 this week.
As a sophomore at Jacksonville State, Cunningham batted an impressive .339, scored a team-high 66 runs, tied for the team lead home runs (10), tied for second in stolen bases (9), and led the team in triples with nine. His two years at Jacksonville State have been highlighted by a long list of awards as a freshman, including Freshman All-America, Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Freshman of the Year, and OVC All-Conference Second Team.
