Former University of Kentucky star Trevor Gott, who spent two summers pitching for the Orleans Firebirds and was the recipient of the Russ Ford Outstanding Relief Pitcher award in 2011, has been called up by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He will be making his major league debut when he toes the rubber for the first time as an Angel.

The 6-foot, 190-pound right-hander was a nonroster invitee to Angels’ spring training this year and is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA and eight saves in the minor leagues. He has fanned 30 batters in 28 innings. Since May 25, when he was promoted from Double-A Arkansas to Triple-A Salt Lake, he made seven appearances, going 8 1/3 innings without giving up a run.

When he takes the mound for the Angels, Gott will become the 30th UK player to make it to the major leagues. There are four Kentucky players currently in MLB – Andrew Albers with the Toronto Blue Jays, Joe Blanton (Bourne, 2001) with the Kansas City Royals, Collin Cowgill (Y-D, 2007) with the Angels and Chris Rusin with the Colorado Rockies.

Gott has pitched for eight teams in seven leagues, including the Arizona Fall League, during two-plus minor league seasons, compiling a record of 7-7 and an ERA of 2.49. His professional career began after San Diego made him its sixth-round draft pick (178th overall) in June 2013. The Angels got him last season in a trade with the Padres.

Gott recorded 23 career saves at Kentucky, including 12 as a junior in 2013. In 2011, his first season with Orleans, he saved 12 games, fashioned a 1.29 ERA and won the Ford award as the Cape League’s best reliever.
