Opening night of the MLB draft on Wednesday was successful for the CCBL as 35% of the players drafted had suited up for the league.  Rounds 2-5 proved to be no different the following night as 58 former Cape League players heard their names called.

Falmouth fans didn’t have to wait long on night two of the draft to hear a familiar name from the 2019 summer season.  Former Commodores outfielder Zach DeLoach was taken six picks into the second round and 43rd overall by the Seattle Mariners.  DeLoach benefited greatly from his Cape League experience as he only hit .261 will 11 home runs over three years with Texas A&M, but once he picked up the wooden bat on Cape Cod he worked with his approach and the change was noticeable.  DeLoach won the Cape League batting title last season hitting .353 with five home runs while helping the ‘Dores to the Western Division championship series against the Cotuit Kettleers.

The Kettleers were the next team to be represented in round two as Casey Schmitt was picked 49th overall by the San Fransisco Giants.  Schmitt was drafted as a third baseman but played on the mound as well on the Cape registering 26 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched.  He also managed five home runs in the regular season and three in the postseason, two of which came in Cotuit’s championship-clinching victory over Harwich.

Former Harwich Mariner Logan Allen was taken 56th overall by the Cleveland Indians. In just three starts on the Cape, he collected two wins, racked up 24 strikeouts and allowed no earned runs.

Then the floodgates opened up as Allen began a stretch where six of seven draftees were Cape League alumni. This included yet another member of the 2019 Cape League Champion Kettleers, Kyle Nicolas who came up big in the 2019 playoffs registering two saves and a 1.50 ERA.

As picks continued to roll in, former Cape Leaguers’ names were all over the draft board as highlighted by the final three rounds where the league was represented by 54% of the athletes called.

Former Commodore Trei Cruz was taken by the Tigers as the first pick of round three and is well on his way to becoming a third-generation MLB’er as both his father and grandfather made it to the big leagues.  On Cape Cod, Cruz excelled, batting .307 with 22 RBI’s while also making the all-star team.

Overall, the 2020 MLB draft yet again demonstrated that the skill that comes through Cape Cod every summer is bound for the MLB as 44% of the selections made throughout the course of the entire draft are Cape League alumni.
