All-Time Cape League Relief Pitchers

            During its long history, the Cape Cod Baseball League has enjoyed several positions of prominence, including relief pitchers. Here are some top firemen:

 

Relief Pitchers

Ryan Speier, Bourne – The Radford star set the league record with 16 saves for the Braves and didn’t allow an earned run in 2001.  Ryan was inducted into the Cape League Hall of Fame in 2013.

Derrick DePriest, Chatham – The North Carolina Tar Heel is 2nd all-time with 15 saves for A’s in 1999, posting 1-0 record and perfect 0.00 ERA. Derrick was inducted into Cape League Hall of Fame in 2008.

Joshua Fields, Dennis-Yarmouth – The Georgia Bulldog saved 13 games and posted a 2.25 ERA in 2006, leading the Red Sox to the CCBL title.

David Robertson, Yarmouth-Dennis – The Alabama Crimson Tide hurler was Playoff MVP for 2006 CCBL Champion Red Sox. David was signed by Yankees and played 12 years in major leagues posting a 53-33 record with 137 saves and a 2.90 ERA

Clint Chrysler, Wareham - The Stetson hurler saved 13 games along with a 3-2 record and 0.96 ERA for the Gatemen in 1996 and was named Cape League Outstanding Relief pitcher with Drew Fischer of Brewster. Clint was drafted by the Seattle Mariners and played several years in the minor leagues.

Drew Fischer, Brewster – The Cal-Berkley hurler saved 13 games for the Whitecaps in 1996, compiling a 1-0 record with a 1.40 ERA.

Scott Winchester, Falmouth – The Clemson Tiger saved 13 games for the Commodores in 1994, going 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA, winning the Cape League Top Relief Pitcher. He was drafted by the Indians and played four seasons with the Reds.

Ryan Feltner, Bourne – The Ohio State Buckeye was named Cape League’s top reliever in 2017, compiling a 1-0 record with eight saves and 0.00 ERA. He was drafted by the Colorado Rockies.

Dylan Thomas, Hyannis -The Hawaii product was the league’s top fireman in 2018, going 3-1 with nine saves and a 1.30 ERA. He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins.

Zane Carlson, Chatham – The Baylor Bear won the Russ Ford Top Relief pitcher in 2002, posting a 2-2 record, 12 saves and a 3.13 ERA. Zane was inducted into the Cape League Hall of Fame in 2009.

Brad Clontz, Wareham – The Virginia Tech product won first Russ Ford award in 1991, posting a 2-1 record and 11 saves with a 0.91 ERA for the Gatemen. Brad was drafted by the Atlanta Braves.

Billy Wagner, Brewster – The fire-balling Ferrum southpaw clocked at 100 MPF for Whitecaps in 1992, being named league’s Outstanding Pro Prospect. Billy was drafted by Houston Astros and played 16 years in major leagues, compiling a 47-40 record with 422 saves and a 2.31 ERA. He led the NL in saves twice with the Astros in 2003 with 61 and 1.78 ERA and with Phillies in 2005 with 70 and 1.51 ERA.

Wayne Granger, Sagamore – The Springfield product played for Sagamore Clouters in CCBL in 1962, batting .329 and led league in homers and RBI while pitching in relief. The sinker-baller pitched in major leagues from 1968-76, compiling a 35-35 record with 108 saves and 3.14 ERA. He led the league in 1970 with 35 saves and a 2.66 ERA for NL Champion Cincinnati Reds. Wayne was inducted into the Cape League Hall of Fame in 2010.
