Cape League Highlights (1995-99)

1995
June 15 – The Cape League records five shutouts in one night: Cotuit 1 – Wareham 0; Falmouth 3 – Bourne 0; Brewster 7 – Harwich 0; Hyannis 1 – Y-D 0; Chatham 6 – Orleans 0.
June 18 – Chatham hits a Cape League record nine doubles in a 14-7 win over Hyannis
June 20 – Wareham steals six bases in a 3-2 win over Chatham
June 27 – Keith Evans (Chatham) sets CCBL record with 31 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings before allowing unearned run in a 12-1 win over Y-D. The old record is 26 innings by Winston Wheeler of Bourne in 1989.
June 28 – Orleans commits six errors in a 6-5 win over Y-D
July 3 – Tim Giles of Orleans scores a Cape League record six runs in a 15-3 win over Hyannis. Past five-run scorers are Steve Lombardozzi and Dave Thompson, both of Falmouth, in a 25–6 win over Orleans on July 16, 1980.
July 7 – Five runners are picked off first base combined in a Hyannis 8-6 win over Brewster
July 7 – Chatham pitcher Keith Evans has his 33-inning earned run streak end as the Commodore beat Chatham, 11-7
July 19 – Eddie Yarnall of Harwich pitches no-hitter in a scoreless game after nine innings. Chatham scores a run off reliever Josh Potter in tenth for 1-0 win.
July 20 – Hyannis has seven errors in a 10-9 loss to Falmouth
July 21 – Cotuit’s 11-game winning streak ended at the hands of Falmouth 6–5
July 22 – The West blanks the East 4-0 in the CCBL All Star Game
July 26 – Hyannis hits 5 home runs in an 11–2 win over Harwich
July 30 – Falmouth turns triple play in the sixth inning but loses to Hyannis 5–3
Aug. 2 – Cotuit wins doubleheader by shutout over Orleans, 2-0 in ten innings and 1-0.

1996
June 20 – Cotuit and Y-D play 13 innings before the game is called a 2-2 tie
June 23 – Hyannis pitcher Randy Choate strikes out 15 batters in an 11 inning 1-0 win over Y-D
June 28 – Glenn Davis of Cotuit hits for the cycle in a 6–5 win over Chatham
July 3 – Chatham’s Jason Fitzgerald goes 5-for-5 but his team loses to Cotuit 6-5
July 5 – Falmouth’s Eric Milton pitches a no hitter blanking Orleans, 2-0
July 11 – Four pitchers strike out a combined 27 batters in Falmouth’s 3–2 win over Hyannis
July 13 – In a game that goes 15 innings, Wareham edges Hyannis 6-5. Wareham commits eight errors and four passed balls, while Hyannis leaves a record 17 runners on base (They will later tie the mark in 2001).
July 14 – Jody Gerut of Harwich has four doubles in a 13–1 win over Y-D
July 16 – Bourne’s Brett Bredensteiner hits the first home run of season for Bourne, which hadn’t hit one in its first 27 games
July 20 – The annual Cape League All Star Game ends in a 6-6 tie
July 24 – In 12 innings, Orleans plays Y-D to a 4-4 tie
July 25 – Seth Etherton of Chatham strikes out 15 in a 5-3 win over Y-D
July 27 – Umpires call a 33-minute sun delay at Coady Field in Bourne with sun setting low behind pitcher’s mound in the top of eighth with Bourne leading Hyannis 5-4
Aug. 1 – Chatham’s Seth Etherton has 14 strikeouts making it 29 K’s in two straight games as the A’s blank Orleans, 1–0
Aug. 2 – Cotuit’s Josh Gandy pitches a 1-0 no-hitter over Wareham
Aug. 3 – Drew Fisher of Brewster earns a record-tying 13th save as the Whitecaps blank Harwich, 1-0
Aug. 4 – Brewster’s C. J. Ankrum goes 5-for-5 in a 9–3 win over Y-D
Aug. 7 – Billy Coleman of Harwich throws 12 shutout innings as the Mariners beat Orleans, 1-0 Aug. 11 – Drew Fisher of Brewster and Clint Chrysler of Wareham tie league record with 13 saves

1997
June 13 – Y-D pitcher J. J. Putz strikes out 17 but loses to Hyannis, 2-1
June 15 – Cotuit commits six errors and Kettleer hurlers throw six wild pitches in 14-3 loss to Chatham
July 8 – Hyannis and Bourne play to a 13-inning 1–1 tie, called due to darkness
July 15 – Donald Rushing of Y-D throws one-hitter to defeat Bourne, 11-0; the night before his Y-D teammate Chance Capel one-hit Chatham, 1-0
July 26 – The West wins the Cape Cod League All Star Game, 5–4 over the East
July 31 – Jody Gerut of Harwich goes 5-for-5 in 5-4 win over Chatham

1998
June 16 – Y-D beats Brewster 4–2 in a 14-inning game
June 17 – Pat Collins of Orleans strikes out 15 in a 2-0 win over Y-D
June 27 – Wareham is issued 14 walks in 10-4 win over Orleans
July 3 – Hank Thoms of Y-D no-hits Orleans, 6-0
July 3 – Harwich’s Rodney Nye hits for the cycle and goes 4-for-5 in an 8-6 win over Brewster
July 6 – Kevin Brown of Hyannis hits for cycle as the Mets beat Brewster, 13–6
July 13 – Pitchers combine for total of 43 strikeouts in Wareham’s 2-1 win over Falmouth in 13 innings. Ben Sheets of Wareham had 16 of those strikeouts.
July 28 – Bobby Kielty of Brewster has seven RBI in 11-8 win over Y-D, which is one shy of CCBL record of eight (which is tied by four players)
July 30 – Wareham opens the game with a Cape League record with six straight hits in an 8-5 win over Bourne
Aug 1 – The East beats the West 3-2 in the CCBL All-Star game
Aug 3 – All three Cape League games this evening end with the same 4-3 score: Brewster 4 – Harwich 3; Y-D 4 – Orleans 3; Chatham 4 – Hyannis 3
Aug 3 – Orleans has five errors in a 4-3 loss to Y-D
Aug 7 – Bobby Kielty finishes short of Triple Crown as he leads league in batting (.384) and RBI (45), but is tied for third in home runs (6), behind Dayton Holt and Edmund Muth (both of Y-D with 7)

1999
June 12 – Brewster has 16 runners left on base in a 4-3 loss to Falmouth
June 17 – Jamie Bubela of Wareham goes 5-for-6 in a 10-7 win over Chatham
June 20 – In the longest game in Cape League history, Wareham edges Orleans 6–5 in 18 innings. That mark would be topped in 2003 when Harwich beats Orleans, 3-2 in 20 innings.
June 23 – Chris Rosado of Y-D steals home in a 6-2 win over Chatham
June 25 – Y-D turns a triple play in a 2-0 loss to Cotuit
June 25 – Harwich makes five errors, but still hangs on to beat Hyannis, 8-7
June 27 – Curtis Sapp of Hyannis goes is 5-for-5 in a 3-1 loss to Chatham
July 3 – Logan Dale of Wareham sets a record with 30 straight shutout innings before allowing an unearned run in a 1-0 loss to Hyannis
July 8 – Logan Dale’s consecutive-inning streak without allowing an earned run ends at record 37 as his Wareham team loses to Harwich 7-5
July 9 – Bourne hits six doubles in an 8-1 win over Hyannis
July 14 – Chatham scoreless string ends after 29 innings, but Brewster scores two in the fourth in a 5-1 win
July 19 – Hyannis hits three consecutive home runs in fourth inning as Kevin Brown hits a two-run homer before Chris Flanagan and Mike Scott go back to back.
July 24 – In the Cape League All Star Game, the West beats the East, 6–4
July 29 – Wareham manager Don Reed wins his record 332nd game, passing Chatham’s Eddie Lyons’ total of 331 in a 9-5 victory over Cotuit
July 29 – Falmouth snaps its 13-game losing streak by beating Harwich, 5–4; it is two shy of the Cape League record of 15 straight losses by Orleans in 1973
Aug. 4 – Derrick DePriest (Chatham) sets Cape League record with 15th save in a 6-3 win over Harwich. The 18 saves by Chatham pitchers is one short of the record of 19 set by Orleans in 1994.
Aug. 5 – Orleans’ Lance Niekro misses triple crown after finishing first in home runs (13) and RBI (44), and is second in batting average (.360) to Wareham’s Jaime Bubela who finishes at.369.
Aug. 5 – Chatham edges Orleans 7–6 in 14 innings
Aug. 13 – Cotuit beats Chatham two games to one in the finals and the Kettleers are awarded the newly-named Arnold Mycock Championship Trophy presented in honor of longtime Cotuit general manager and patriarch.
