Week # 5 - Games 7/14-7/20

Sportsticker Selects Players of the Week: Orleans’ David Coffey and Wareham’s David Sanders have been named the Coca-Cola Batter and Pitcher of the week, respectively, for games played July 14 – July 20. 


     Coffey (Perry, GA/Georgia), a starter for the East All Stars, hit .421. In 5 games, the Cardinals’ outfielder was 8-for-19 with a double, 2 HR, 4 runs, 7 RBI and 1 stolen base. In addition, he was quad-named a Home Run hitter of the week.


     On the mound, David Sanders (Tulsa, OK/Wichita State) hurled a near perfect game against the Harwich Mariners on July 16. In the complete game effort, the West All Star selection allowed just 2 hits, no walks and struckout 8. 


     Joining Coffey, as the home run hitters this week are college teammate Lee Mitchell (Cotuit/Carterville, GA/Georgia), Cape teammate Brandon Boggs (Marietta, GA/Georgia Tech) and Y-D’s Wes Whisler (Noblesville, IN/UCLA). Each of the four cranked out two round-trippers.


     All Stars selected: The 10 field managers have made their selections for the 2002 All-Star Game which, will be held on July 27 at Whitehouse Field in Harwich.  *=starters

    All Star Game to be televised on Fox SportsNet: The 2002 All Star Game will be aired and seen in more than 3,000,000 homes during prime time, Tuesday, July 30 from 7:30-10 p.m. and again on Saturday, August 3 at a time to be announced. 


     WXTK radio to broadcast All-Star Game: WXTK (95.1) will broadcast the game live immediately following the Red Sox-Tigers game. Geoff Converse and John Garner, the League’s Director of Broadcasting will announce the game,


     Keyspan Homeruns for Housing Update: There were 15 home runs this past week to bring the league total to 119. That means a $11,900 donation from Keyspan for the Housing Assistance Corporation. 


     Harwich All-Star Can Do It All: Shaun Marcum, a member of the Eastern All-Star team, can do it all. He is the starting shortstop for the Harwich Mariners and one of the top closers in the league. A member of the South West Missouri University team during the spring, Marcum has posted a low 0.47 ERA in the 19.1 innings he’s pitched. He has only allowed one run. Shaun has a .197 batting average, with 11 hits and one homerun. Shaun has impressed many Mariner fans with his versatility, and will be a valuable asset during the All-Star game in Harwich. ~Sarah Hinkley


     Former Cape League President and Orleans’ GM honored before game: Russ Ford, who will be inducted in the Cape League Hall of Fame in November, threw out the first pitch on Saturday prior to the Chatham vs. Orleans game at Eldredge Park. Also on the mound were former Cardinals’ managers John Castlebury and Tom Yankus.


     Oh say she can sing: Longtime Cape League scout Ty Brown’s niece, Anne Driscoll sang the national anthem at the July 20th Orleans’ game.
