Spectacle of Trees raises more than $75,000 for local non-profits

HYANNIS ---- The Cape Cod Baseball League partnered this holiday season with 16 non-profit organizations to join in the “Spectacle of Trees,” held at the JFK Hyannis Museum in December.

Chatham’s Diane Troy created a special Christmas tree for the Cape League, entitled “Batting 1.000.” This is the third time in the event’s four years that the Cape League has participated.

The CCBL tree was supported by local baseball teams and fans. Each tree on display represented a non-profit organization. All proceeds from raffle ticket purchases went to that organization.

This year, the “Spectacle of Trees” raised $72,760 for 17 organizations, nearly doubling last year’s $38,700 total. A possible reason for the increase was holding the event over two weekends instead of one. There was also a kick-off reception that featured 12 wreaths on display in the Cape League Hall of Fame Museum.

“The Cape League was honored to be included in this event, and we feel it is a great community effort that shows we are all working together,” CCBL president Judy Walden Scarafile said. “The trees were spectacular and it is an event the public looks forward to each year. I have seen this grow over four years and Bill Murphy, the creator of the ‘Spectacle,’ has done an incredible job. . . actually a spectacular job.”
