BOURNE, MA- In the summer of 1988, the Bourne Braves began play as a Cape Cod Baseball League expansion team, calling the Massachusetts Maritime Academy home and hoping to become a fixture among the league’s perennial playoff contenders. As they begin their 25th season, the Braves aim to qualify for the Cape League playoffs for the fifth straight year under the lights of the jewel that is Doran Park.
Harvey Shapiro, whose 262 Cape League victories places him 7th all-time, welcomes new General Manager Chuck Sturtevant, hoping to capture his 4th Divisional crown in 6 years and bring the franchise’s second league championship back to Bourne.
Shapiro also hopes his returning players can help the newcomers adjust to the rigors of Cape League baseball while building on their own success of a summer ago.
The returnees are headlined by 2011 CCBL All-Star Colin Moran (North Carolina), pre-season All-American and consensus top pick in the 2013 Major League draft, who overcame a broken hand to lead the Tar Heels to strong season in the ACC.
Joining Moran for a second summer along the Canal is classmate Tommy Coyle (North Carolina) as well as a pair of top prospects for the 2013 draft, Ryan Eades (LSU) and Ryne Stanek (Arkansas).
As always, the Braves bring in a lot of talented new faces who will be making their Cape League debuts and this year’s team is headlined by Vanderbilt catcher Chris Harvey, 2011 high school All-American as well as Ole Miss star hurler Mike Mayers.
The Braves open the 2012 campaign at Whitehouse Field on June 14th vs. defending Cape Cod Baseball League champion Harwich.
