Brian Doyle Is New Cape League Web Editor

HYANNIS, Mass. - Brian Doyle of West Yarmouth has accepted the position of web editor for the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Internet site, www.capecodbaseball.org effective immediately. Doyle, who started in the Cape League as an intern with the Hyannis Mets in 2005, also serves as an official scorer and as editor of the program for the July 23 Under Armour Cape League All-Star Game at Fenway Park.

Cape League Director of Public Relations & Broadcasting John W. Garner Jr. announced Doyle’s appointment this week, noting that he replaces Joe Sherman, who became web editor in 2007 and has since taken on additional duties. Garner said Sherman requested the change in order to devote more time to his new assignment as co-executive producer of the league’s weekly half-hour cable television show, “Cape League On Deck,” and as the league’s special projects coordinator, working for league President Judy Walden Scarafile and Commissioner Paul Galop.

Garner said Sherman, also a resident of West Yarmouth, will continue to write occasional articles for the league web site and will consult with Doyle to insure a smooth transition. “Joe has been and remains a valued member of our public relations staff,” Garner said. “And Brian brings an element of youthful enthusiasm to the demanding job of web editor. We are fortunate that he was available and willing to take on this demanding assignment at this time.”

Doyle, 23, who has written for sports websites Deadspin.com and SportsJudge.com, is a graduate of Seton Hall University and has re-joined the Cape Cod Baseball League this summer after living in the Dominican Republic. He is also a leading scholar in the field of international sports law, including a recent publication in the Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business, “Antitrust and 'Free Movement' Risks of Expanding U.S. Professional Sports Leagues into Europe.”

“I’m looking forward to my new role and Joe Sherman, who did a fantastic job during his time as web editor, has done a great job transitioning me into my new position,” Doyle said. “Most of all though, I look forward helping the league’s interns get the most out of their writing experience here at the Cape.”

Sherman, 67, has nearly five decades of experience working for print and broadcast media outlets. He is a former television sportscaster and sports talk show host and once served as slot man on the sports desk of the old Boston Herald. From 1959 to 1969, he headed the sports staff of the Cape Cod Standard-Times, and he retired several years ago after nearly three decades in various editorial positions with The Enterprise of Brockton.

He first became active in summer baseball on the Cape in the early 1960s and was part of the group that brought about the 1963 merger of the Upper Cape and Lower Cape leagues that launched the “modern era” of the Cape Cod League. He may be the only Cape League volunteer who can claim to have played and coached in the league, served as a team general manager, league publicist, scorer and statistician and also covered the league as a writer and a play-by-play broadcaster.

“That was a long time ago,” Sherman said when reminded of his early work with the league. “I would rather focus on the exciting things that are happening today, including 'Cape League On Deck,' which started in impressive fashion and is getting better each week thanks to a very talented combination of league interns and staff members at the Cape Cod Community Media Center in South Yarmouth. "I hope I can contribute to its continued growth and success,” he said.
