ORLEANS, Mass. – Sue Horton, of the Orleans Firebirds, was recently honored with the John Wylde General Manager of the Year award as the Cape Cod Baseball League’s top GM. The award was presented during  pregame ceremonies  prior to the Cape League playoffs at Eldredge Park.

Horton began her tenure as Firebirds general manager in 2000, and teams she has assembled have compiled a 415-314-21 record. She has also helped form two CCBL championship teams—2003 and 2005—while bringing more than 50 future major leaguers to Orleans.

“It’s very humbling,” said Horton when asked about what it means to win the award for the first time in her career as the Orleans GM. “I know how hard everyone works in this league—especially the general managers—year round. They never take a break so I am indebted to all of them for their support and their help because we work as a team.”

“It’s very special,” she continued when asked about how it felt to have her hard work rewarded with this honor. “I will absolutely treasure this and I am very grateful for the support

This season, the Firebirds posted a 20-23-1 regular-season record and earned the third seed in the East Division for the postseason. Orleans finished tied for the highest batting average in the league in 2016 and finished with the third lowest earned run average in the Cape League.

The award is named after the late John Wylde, former GM/president of the Wareham Gatemen. The award is given to the GM who demonstrates the qualities and dedication Wylde possessed.

Previous Cape League General Manager of the Year recipients include Chuck Sturtevant (2014-15), Eric Zmuda (Falmouth, 2013), Jim Martin (Yarmouth-Dennis, 2012) and Bill Bussiere (Hyannis, 2011).
