Prior to their Wednesday game, the Cotuit Kettleers honored over 200 local students and teachers at Lowell Park. 41 retiring teachers and 164 National Honors Society students from Barnstable, Mashpee, and Sandwich public schools were recognized by the team and their fans for their contributions to the local academic community.

The outstanding students were honored on the field, standing in front of the Cotuit dugout, wearing custom-made Kettleers’ hats which read “Salute to Scholars” on the side.

According to organizer Don Lesieur, the event had been in the works for about 10 months. Lesieur said that when the Kettleers approached the local schools about the event, the school’s leadership met him with “unqualified support.”

The festivities culminated in the first-pitch ceremony, which included representatives from all three schools. Dr. Meg Mayo-Brown and Patrick Clark represented Barnstable schools, Patricia DeBoer and Mark Balestracci came from Mashpee, and Dr. Pamela Gould and James Mulcahy led the Sandwich contingent.

In addition to honoring the local students and teachers, the event also was a success in terms of strengthening the connection between the Kettleers and the village of Cotuit.

“The Kettleers want to be a part of the community,” Lesieur said. “Events like these, honoring veterans, first responders, and things like that help draw us closer to the community.”
