Over the past 17 years, there has been a lot of change throughout the Cape Cod Baseball League. Seven different teams have won championships, three teams have had name changes, and there has been a replacement in both the league president and league commissioner positions.

One constant however has been the support of Curry College. Since November of 2003, Curry College has been a sponsor of the Cape Cod Baseball League in a partnership that has been successful for both parties.

“The partnership between the Cape League and Curry College is a symbiotic one,” said Curry College President Ken Quigley. “We’re proud to support the Cape Cod Baseball League because of the good work they do and the tremendous opportunities it provides for our students.”

The opportunities the partnership provides for Curry is highlighted by numerous internships with all ten teams across the league.

“When talking to them (Curry College) throughout the years they are the first to ask, what else can we do. We have a great relationship with their intern program which is critical to the league and teams,” said Senior Vice President  Director of Corporate Development Bill Bussiere.

Curry College is a private institution that offers 27 undergraduate majors and five master’s degrees. In addition to their main campus located in Milton, just seven miles from downtown Boston, they have a second campus located in Plymouth.

“Curry is a special place because of the students, the families, and the alums that form our close-knit community,” said Quigley.

Like many colleges, Curry was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and forced to finish the spring semester remotely. Over the past six months, the Curry College administration has worked on a return plan for the Fall 2020 semester.

“The biggest challenge was the unknown nature of the COVID virus, and making sure our community would be safe,” said Quigley. “Flowing from that, we want to ensure that our students have a good educational experience, online or on campus.”

Despite the hardships in transitioning to online learning, Curry students actively helped their communities throughout the pandemic. 20 of Curry’s nursing students volunteered at Tufts Hospital throughout the COVID crisis. Additionally, all the nursing students collected Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) across the campus to deliver to healthcare providers at the beginning of the crisis. Among those healthcare providers they assisted was Cape Cod Healthcare.

“Many of our sponsors have been affected by Covid-19.  We are amazed how many are in the forefront providing essential services to those in need,” said Bussiere. “Curry's involvement in the community is no surprise to me, it goes to the question that they always ask us, "what else can we do!"”

According to Quigley, this is an example of all the service in the community Curry College students complete as they strive to be outstanding corporate citizens. Roughly 23% of their assessments for student athletes and coaches is based on service projects completed in the community. Additionally, the education program at Curry has hands-on roles in helping children day in and day out.

In his 24 years as President of Curry College, Quigley has overseen the college triple in size and add numerous new programs. He has also served as an Honorary Director for the Cape Cod Baseball League for the past few years. But when asked what he is most about during his time at Curry, it always goes back to the students.

“I’m most proud of the great success of our students as alums, establishing the foundation of their success here and then going back out into their communities,” said Quigley.
