Cape League Weekly Recap - Week Six

As the Cape Cod Baseball League convenes for the first true All-Star festivities since 2019, the teams are also fighting a fierce playoff battle. With just one week remaining in the regular season, games are as important as they’ve been all year. While the teams jockey for spots in the standings, it’s time to take a look at who made standout performances, in this week’s Weekly Recap presented by Legacy Athletics.

Bourne Braves (16-14-6): Christopher Brito, 3B/1B, Rutgers

Christopher Brito assembled an amazing week in Bourne. Across the Braves’ five games, Brito hit .438, including two multi-hit games. The Bourne infielder’s outstanding week was highlighted by a Friday night performance against Wareham in which he went 3-3, doubling, scoring twice, and adding an RBI to help propel the Braves to victory. The Rutgers product is currently in a tie for second place on the Cape in RBI at 20, and his sensational week propelled his triple slash line on the season to .256/.386/.436.

Brewster Whitecaps (14-16-6): Kevin Keister, 2B/SS, University of Maryland

Kevin Keister had appeared in only one game for Brewster coming into the week, but he quickly assembled an impressive Cape resume. Across the four games in which he appeared for the Whitecaps this week, the Maryland middle infielder hit .357, scoring two runs and driving in two in the process. Keister added two multi-hit games, most notably a 3-4 showing against Orleans where he hit his first homer of the campaign, adding a double as well.

Chatham Anglers (11-18-7): Guy Garibay Jr., OF, Rice

Guy Garibay Jr. was that guy this week for the red-hot Anglers. With Chatham battling for a playoff spot, Garibay hit .333 this week, adding six RBI, two runs scored, and a homer to fuel the Anglers pursuit for postseason positioning. The standout Owl outfielder also doubled twice, walked thrice, and added a steal, all while providing sensational defense in the outfield. Garibay’s recent surge has propelled him to a .795 OPS on the season, and his four long balls place him in a tie for ninth in the league.

Cotuit Kettleers (19-12-5): Cam Schuelke, P/SS, Northwood

The Kettleers have returned to their winning ways as of late, with the contributions of fireman Cam Schuelke helping lock down the games out of the bullpen. Schuelke made three clean relief appearances for Cotuit this past week, totaling six and a third scoreless innings, picking up two wins in the process. The Northwood product’s standout appearance came against Bourne on Wednesday, in which he tossed four and two-thirds innings, striking out four while allowing just two three hits. Schuelke has racked up 12 and a third innings so far this season without allowing an earned run, and has also notched three saves.

Falmouth Commodores (16-17-3): Alex Mooney, IF, Duke

Alex Mooney caught fire this week for the Commodores, furthering an already impressive season. The Falmouth infielder hit .409 on the week, adding a home run and seven RBI. Mooney hit safely in every Falmouth contest this week, with three appearances resulting in multi-hit performances. The Blue Devil also scored five times this week, adding four stolen bases to push him to fifth place in the circuit at 13. Mooney is currently tied for second in the league with 40 hits, and is slashing .282/.342/.430 on his impressive summer.  

Harwich Mariners (13-17-6): Joe Savino, RHP, Elon

Joe Savino only made one relief appearance for the Mariners this week, but he certainly made his mark. The Harwich righty tossed five and a third innings of scoreless relief, striking out six, and allowing just four baserunners. Savino also received the win in his outing, his third of the season, which ties him for second in the league. Altogether, Savino has an extremely impressive 0.95 WHIP with opponents hitting a measly .196 against him.

Hyannis Harbor Hawks (20-10-6): Mitch Jebb, SS, Michigan State

Mitch Jebb absolutely raked this week for the league’s first place team, hitting an other-wordly .476. Jebb strung together three multi-hit games, highlighted by a performance at Dunkin’ Donuts Park on Wednesday in which he went 3-4 and was a homer shy of the cycle, scoring three times. The Harbor Hawk shortstop also doubled three times, scored six times, and added two steals to his season totals. The Michigan State product’s week propelled him into fourth-place with a .328 batting average, and his 17 stolen bases rank second in the league.

Orleans Firebirds (13-19-4): Jack Bulger, C/LF, Vanderbilt

Jack Bulger was an on-base machine this week for Orleans. The Firebird utilityman reached base ten times in his five games this week, producing a .476 on-base percentage. Bulger’s week was highlighted by a 2-4 outing against Wareham in which he doubled, scored, and drove in three. The VandyBoy ended the week riding a six-game walk streak that has seen his season OBP climb to .367.

Wareham Gatemen (11-19-6): Owen Diodati, OF/C, University of Oregon

Owen Diodati makes his second Weekly Recap appearance in his third week on the Cape after assembling another amazing week for Wareham. The Oregon outfielder hit .400 on the week for the Gatemen, reaching base safely in each of his appearances, adding a double. Across his 15 Cape League games this summer, Diodati is slashing .359/.510/.538, and has compiled an impressive 9.83 runs created.

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (19-10-7): Caden Connor, OF/1B, Cal State Fullerton

Caden Connor caught fire this week in Y-D, assembling an impressive performance. Connor put together a .438 average this week for the Red Sox, scoring twice in the process, and hitting safely in each of his appearances. The Titan utilityman added two multi-hit performances, highlighted by a 2-3 showing at Brewster where he doubled and drove in a run. Connor ended the week riding a six-game hitting streak as Y-D looks to clinch a playoff spot in the next few days.
