The Wareham Gatemen took home the title for 2018, winning 6 straight games to sweep the playoffs and going home Cape Cod League Champions. They finished the regular season at 25-17-2, going 5-4-1 in their last 10, losing their last game of the season. But, not before they earned the number one seed in the playoffs.

Wareham took game one of the championship series with a 5-3 win over the Chatham Anglers. The game was locked at 0-0 until the bottom of the fifth when the Gatemen put up three runs courtesy of Austin Shenton’s bases-clearing double. Chatham made their way onto the board in the seventh inning with a Spencer Torkelson solo homer. The Gatemen responded in the bottom of the inning with a RBI triple from Jakob Goldfarb and a sacrifice fly from Jeremy Ydens. Down 5-1 heading into the ninth, Chatham rallied for a few runs that came on a Tristin English two-run blast. The rally was cut short, and the Gatemen moved one game closer to taking the 2018 CCBL title.

Then the Wareham Gatemen won their sixth straight game, going undefeated in the playoffs and winning the title. Chatham was up early in the first courtesy of a Colin Simpson single that scored Blake Sabol. In the third, Wareham took the lead on a single to right field from Austin Shenton that scored Lael Lockhart Jr. and Oliver Dunn. Another Gatemen run came in the fourth with a Lockhart single, himself scoring Drew Millas. Both teams scored a run in each of the sixth and seventh inning including RBI singles from Lockhart and Shenton for Wareham and for Chatham a groundout and a solo shot from Simpson. Up 5-3, Wareham scored four runs in the ninth inning to seal the victory and ultimately the championship title. Millas doubled home two runs, followed by another two-run double from Gian Martellini that guaranteed the win.

In the regular season, California Berkeley’s Andrew Vaughn led the team with 5 home runs, despite playing in just 14 games. Austin Shenton was outstanding in the league’s talent pool, and led the Gatemen in average, doubles, walks with 25 free passes, and hits with 52. Jeremy Ydens produced the most runs with 34 RBI which was the most in the league. USC’s Connor Lunn went 3-1, good for most wins on the team, and posted a 2.28 ERA in 5 appearances, 3 of them starts. Vaughn’s Cal Berkeley teammate Jared Horn struckout the most opposing hitters with 36 in 28.1 innings.
