'Catch' not exactly a home run

TIM MILLER

Well, it's no "Field of Dreams."

"Summer Catch," a romantic comedy starring Freddie Prinze Jr. as a pitcher in the Cape League, will not go down in history as one of the classic baseball movies.

Prinze plays hard-throwing, hot-tempered lefty Ryan Dunne. He's a local kid, who works for his landscaper father when not playing ball for the Chatham A's. Early in the season, he falls for Tenley Parrish (Jessica Biel), daughter of one of Dad's wealthy customers. Tenley's father doesn't want his daughter involved with the landscaper's kid.

The film pays due respect to the Cape League. The movie also does a fine job of presenting the mental side of sports, particularly pitching, and how it can affect an athlete. Matthew Lillard ("Scream") is funny as the A's catcher. And we do get some nice outdoor shots of the Cape.

On the downside, the film is predictable; the on-again, off-again romance gets tiresome; the characters' speeches are hokey; the humor (gags about heavy women and the Special Olympics) is juvenile and mean-spirited; and the ending is ludicrous.

Not exactly a home run.
