Pre-Season Report

Now that spring has finally arrived on Cape Cod and our record snow accumulations from this past winter are a fading memory, all of our extensive planning sessions throughout the off-season are coming to fruition. Rosters are nearly complete and budgetary concerns have been prudently addressed by our unique corps of unselfish volunteers.

Fields are being freshened up, refreshment stands are getting stocked and souvenir merchandise will have selections greater than ever. It does not seem like it was nine months ago that the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox and the Falmouth Commodores engaged in an epic battle in our 2004 Championship Series with the Red Sox being crowned CCBL Champions after a 14 year drought. How ironic that the Y-D Red Sox and the Boston Red Sox would win it all in the same year!

The 2005 season is now upon us with some exciting newsworthy items from off-season planning sessions. Mr. John Reid is the new General Manager of the Harwich Mariners. John, an alum of Boston College where he is currently employed in the BC Athletic Department, has extensive experience in the CCBL. He served for several years during his college days as an intern for the Chatham A’s. John replaces Mike DeAnzeris who did an outstanding job for Harwich. His employment and pending marriage will have Mike off-Cape for a good portion of the summer season. Mike will be sorely missed but John Reid will do an outstanding job in filling his shoes.

As part of the most aggressive anti-tobacco policy for collegiate summer baseball nationwide, we are pleased to recognize David’s Seeds as the Official Seed Company of the Cape Cod Baseball League. David’s Seeds will be supplying all ten teams with a year’s supply of sunflower seeds in an effort to assist us in providing an option to the players and coaches for something other than smokeless tobacco. We are very excited about this initiative.

Saturday, June 11th should prove to be a very special day at McKeon Field in Hyannis as the Cape Cod Baseball League hosts a United States Military All-Star Team in an exhibition game at 2PM. This patriotic event will showcase current members of our Armed Forces against a team of current Cape Leaguers representing all of our CCBL teams. You may want to get there early to enjoy all the day’s festivities with an opportunity to say “thank you” to the real heroes of our country. Admission is free just like every one of our games.

Opening Day is only 5 days later as we kick off the 2005 season on Thursday, June 16th with 5PM home games at Cotuit and Yarmouth-Dennis while the other three games start at 7PM in Falmouth, Harwich and Orleans.

This year’s All-Star Game is at McKeon Field in Hyannis on Saturday, July 30th at 3PM. Pre-game events will start shortly after noon. Please look for further press releases about our All-Star Game that draws very large crowds and over 100 Major League Scouts! This event is always one of the highlights of the summer.

On behalf of our CCBL Officers, Board of Directors, Executive Committee Members, tireless franchise volunteers, coaches and players, thanks so much for supporting the Cape Cod Baseball League and being a major reason why we are widely regarded as the finest collegiate summer baseball League in America! We appreciate your unconditional dedication and are pleased to provide wholesome, family entertainment for your benefit. We are truly glad you are here!
