All-Star game: West preview

For all intents and purposes, this year’s Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star game at Red Wilson Field may as well be the Falmouth Commodores vs. the East All-Stars.
Falmouth tied the host Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox with seven All-Star selections and has more starters in the midsummer classic than any other team in the league, with six of the nine batters calling Falmouth home this summer: Kevin Cron (TCU) at first, Leon Byrd (Rice) at second, Kevin Newman (Arizona) at shortstop, Rhys Hoskins (Sacramento St.) in left, Dylan Davis (Oregon St.) in right, and Casey Gillaspie (Wichita St.) as designated hitter. The top offense in the league will make its presence felt on Saturday, July 27.
Hyannis Harbor Hawks and Bourne Braves each have five selections, and the Cotuit Kettleers and the defending champion Wareham Gatemen each have four. Among that group is the West’s starting pitcher, Jaron Long (Ohio St.), who has been the league’s best pitcher this summer with a perfect 5-0 record and an astounding 0.32 ERA.
Teammate Max Pentecost (Kennesaw St.) is the current league batting leader, whose .394 average is tops following the signing and departure of would-be All-Star Mike Ford (Princeton) of Cotuit. The Kettleers still have one starter in speedy center fielder Jake Fincher (North Carolina St.). The West-leading Harbor Hawks also have a starter in third baseman Austin Slater (Stanford).
The West team certainly appears to be the front-runner in this year’s All-Star game from a raw numbers standpoint, with the top four RBI leaders, the batting leader, and the home run leader in its starting lineup, and the ERA leader on the mound with the saves leader waiting in the bullpen. But fans will have to wait to see if all the West All-Stars can play to their potential on game day.
