The third week of the Cape League season saw many strong performances, as rosters are beginning to fully take shape. Keep an eye out for the remaining players set to debut, while we take a look at some standouts from the past seven days.
Bourne Braves: Garrett Michel, 1B, Virginia Tech
Garrett Michael put together a strong week for the surging Bourne Braves. Michel had a hit in each of his four games this week, highlighted by a 3-4 outing at Lowell Park on Sunday. The Hokie infielder also doubled twice this week, and drove in a run in three straight games. Michel’s strong week pushed his season average up to .283, and he will look to carry on his strong campaign in weeks to come.
Brewster Whitecaps: Trevor Werner, 3B/SS, Texas A&M
Trevor Werner put on a show this week for the Whitecaps. The Aggie infielder slashed .391/.423/.696 on the week, with five of his nine hits going for extra bases. Werner also added six runs scored and a whopping 10 RBI in the past seven days. The Brewster standout also showed off his speed a little bit, stealing two bases. Trevor Werner will look to be a key piece for Brewster the rest of the season.
Chatham Anglers: Kaeden Kent, SS/3B, Texas A&M
Another Aggie standout this week was Chatham’s Kaeden Kent. Kent is currently riding a four-game hitting streak, with two multi-hit showings as a part of that. Kaeden’s week was highlighted by his Friday night showing against Harwich where he went 2-5 with a double, a triple, and a run scored. Kent is currently hitting .292 on the summer, and will look to fuel the Anglers for the rest of the summer.
Cotuit Kettleers: Jake Gigliotti, RHP, Northeastern
Jake Gigliotti put together a dominant outing for the Kettleers this week. Gigliotti tossed four innings in Cotuit’s win over Wareham on Friday, striking out seven while allowing just one hit. The Northeastern product did not allow an earned run in the outing, lowering his ERA on the season to 0.71. So far this summer, Gigliotti has held opposing hitters to a .163 average, and has yet to allow an extra-base hit. Jake Gigliotti will likely be a big part of the Cotuit staff for the coming weeks.
Falmouth Commodores: Gavin Kilen, SS/2B, Louisville
Gavin Kilen was a force this week for Falmouth. The Cardinal middle infielder slashed .400/.400/.550 on the week, driving in four runs in the process. Kilen also doubled for three of his eight hits and scored three runs as well. His strong week was propelled by his game Thursday night, where he went 4-5 with three doubles, three runs scored, and an RBI. Gavin Kilen will look to carry his strong week into the rest of the summer.
Harwich Mariners: Sean Hard, RHP, Boston College
Sean Hard made two appearances for the Mariners this week, and was dominant in both of them. The Boston College product tossed five total innings, striking out seven batters. Hard only allowed two hits in the five innings, which brought his ERA down to 1.28 for the summer. Harwich will look to continue their solid start behind the arm of Sean Hard.
Hyannis Harbor Hawks: Ethan Lanthier, RHP, St. Cloud State
Ethan Lanthier continued his very strong summer for the Hawks this past week. Lantheir made two appearances, picking up the win in one. The St. Cloud State product threw four-and-a-third total innings, striking out seven while allowing just one hit. Lanthier has held hitters to just a .176 batting average so far on the campaign, and will look to keep dominating out of the Hyannis bullpen.
Orleans Firebirds: Jack Penney, SS/3B, Notre Dame
Jack Penney put together an incredibly strong week for the Firebirds this week. Penney got a hit in each of his five games this week, pushing his active hit streak to six games. The Notre Dame infielder’s week was fuelled by his 3-3 performance against YD Friday night, in which he also walked twice, tripled, and scored three runs. Penney’s week pushed his OPS to a solid .794, with a .306 average. The contributions of Jack Penney will hopefully help the Birds to continue to catch fire.
Wareham Gatemen: David Glancy, OF, Notre Dame
David Glancy only registered nine official at-bats this week, but it was not because he wasn’t playing. Opposing pitchers rightfully refused to give him anything to hit, as Glancy walked in 11 of his 20 plate appearances. The Notre Dame product took full advantage of his free passes, stealing six bases and scoring seven times. He was prepared to hit when he actually got his pitches, going 4-9 in his at-bats. David Glancy is a threat both at the plate and on the bases, and will look to continue his hot summer.
Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox: Smith Pinson, RHP, Kennesaw State
Smith Pinson put together one of the best starts of the summer so far this week. In his outing against Bourne on Thursday night, Pinson went six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits without walking a batter. The Owl righthander also struck out seven in the outing, picking up his first win of the summer. Smith Pinson will look to carry his strong performance this week into his next outings this summer.
