John Castleberry Named Commissioner of the Cape Cod Baseball League

Cape Cod, MA. – John Castleberry has officially been named the Commissioner of the Cape Cod Baseball League (Cape League).

Castleberry is the 14th Commissioner in the history of the Cape League, succeeding Eric Zmuda who served as Commissioner of the Cape League from 2019 through 2023.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to work alongside our 10 franchises to maintain a strong on-field product and further develop the Cape League’s reputation as the best collegiate summer league in the country, as we build towards a strong future,” said Castleberry. “The Cape League is where I got my start in the baseball industry and has remained a passion throughout my life, taking on the role of Commissioner is an honor.”

The Commissioner of the Cape League’s primary responsibility is to monitor the compliance of all competition rules and guidelines, and manage any disputes that arise related to on-field matters. Additional responsibilities include confirming the eligibility of all players in accordance with applicable NCAA, NACSB and Cape League regulations and issuing procedural directives related to postponement procedures, field maintenance requirements, roster releases and All-Star Game responsibilities.

“John Castleberry has an extensive background working in baseball, including in the Cape League, and will bring significant expertise and a fresh perspective to the league. I look forward to working with John moving forward to enhance the quality of play and the experience for our players,” said Andrew Lang, President of the Cape League. “I want to thank Eric Zmuda for all his contributions as Commissioner to the Cape League over the past five years, including his leadership in addressing the unprecedented challenges brought about by the pandemic.”

Castleberry's first involvement in the Cape League came as manager of Orleans from 1984 through 1991. In 1986, Castleberry was named Cape League Manager of the Year and led Orleans to their eighth Cape League Championship in franchise history. Castleberry has since remained an advisor to the Cape League, while pursuing an extensive career in baseball.

Castleberry was the head baseball coach at George Washington University from 1985 through 1991, before working in MLB scouting departments since 1991 for the Miami Marlins, Cincinnati Reds, Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies and the San Francisco Giants. Additionally, Castleberry was a co-founder and president of East Coast Pro, organizers of the premier annual high school baseball showcase event.
