West Division All-Star Preview

The Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game will be held on Saturday, July 22nd at Whitehouse Field. The best players from both the West and East Divisions will be on display in one of the Cape League’s premiere events of the summer. The West Division features an excellent lineup and starting pitching that is sure to put on a show.

Starting on the mound will be Camron Hill (Georgia Tech) from the Cotuit Kettleers. The big lefty boasts an ERA of 0.36, the lowest on the Cape by a wide margin. His 35 strikeouts are also the most on the Cape. Hill has been a dominant force from the left-side and will get things started on the mound for the West.

Catching for the West DIvision is Caden Bodine (Coastal Carolina) of the Bourne Braves. Bodine is slashing .379/.478/.414 for a .892 OPS in 69 plate appearances. Despite not qualifying for the batting title, he still ranks tied for 11th on the Cape in RBI (15).

At first base for the West is Cole Mathis (Charleston) of the Cotuit Kettleers. Mathis leads the West with six home runs and 24 RBI. He is slashing .319/.393/.639/1.032 in 84 plate appearances this season. His .639 slugging leads the Cape League.

The starting second baseman is Garen Caulfield (Arizona) from the Wareham Gatemen. He is slashing .295/.394/.393 for a .788 OPS in 71 plate appearances. His 12.6% walk rate combined with a batting average close to .300 makes Caulfield an on-base machine.

Starting at third base is Cam Smith (Florida State) from the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. Smith has been one of the most dynamic and consistent hitters on the Cape this summer. He leads the league in hits (40) runs scored (28) and is tied for the lead in doubles (9).

The shortstop is Jonathan Vastine (Vanderbilt) from the Bourne Braves. He is slashing .343/.467/.500 for a .967 OPS in 92 plate appearances. His .467 OBP leads the Cape League, and his .500 slugging leads all shortstops.

In left field will be Travis Bazzana (Oregon State) from the Falmouth Commodores. Bazzana is a native of Australia and is one of the most outstanding players in all of college baseball. On the Cape, he is slashing .314/.404/.465 for a .869 OPS.

The starting center fielder will be Carter Mathison (Indiana) from the Cotuit Kettleers. Mathison is slashing ..333/.487/.367/ for a .854 OPS in 79 plate appearances. His 18 walks this season are the fourth most among all Cape Leaguers.

Starting in right field will be Nick McLain (Arizona State) from the Wareham Gatemen. Nick’s brother Matt won All-Star game MVP in 2019 when he also played for Wareham. He is slashing .294/.385/.446 for a .831 OPS in 109 plate appearances.

Lastly, the designated hitter for the West will be Derek Bender (Coastal Carolina) from the Bourne Braves. Bender leads the Cape in batting average (.373) and has been one of the most electrifying hitters in the league. He is currently slashing .373/.458/.566 for a 1.025 OPS in 96 plate appearances.

The following players were selected as reserves for the West Division All-Stars. From the Bourne Braves, INF Bryce Elbin (Alabama). From the Falmouth Commodores, INF Gavin Kilen (Louisville) and UTIL Kade Snell (Alabama). From the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, C Brody Donay (Florida), OF Trey Lipsey (Ohio State), OF Nick Mitchell (Western Illinois), and UTIL Elijah Hainline (Washington State). Lastly, from the Wareham Gatemen, INF Grant Hussey (West Virginia), and UTIL Bobby Boser (Virginia Tech).

The following players were selected as pitchers for the West Division All-Stars. From the Bourne Braves, Matthew McShane (Saint Joseph’s), and Bryce Cunningham (Vanderbilt). From the Cotuit Kettleers, Jake Gigliotti (Northeastern). From the Falmouth Commodores, Joey Ryan (Boston College), and Garrett Coe (UConn). From the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, Ethan Lanthier (St. Cloud State), and Jamie Arnold (Florida State). Lastly, from the Wareham Gatemen, Will Koger (Louisville) and Jake Faherty (Arkansas).
