HARWICH ---- Pratt Maynard’s (N.C. State) performance this summer has been impressive enough to earn him a spot as the starting catcher on the East Division All-Star team, although he’ll likely remember his time in Harwich most for his grand slam walk-off against Hyannis earlier this month.

The year was 1967 and Yarmouth’s new manager, Lou Lamoriello, convinced the parents of a 17-year-old Connecticut schoolboy star that their son would benefit from a season in the Cape Cod Baseball League. His argument was prophetic as Bobby Valentine turned in a solid season, batting .294 against some of the nation’s best collegiate pitchers to virtually guarantee that he would be a high choice in baseball’s amateur entry draft the following spring.

Those famous words from the movie “Field of Dreams” were applicable last Tuesday at the Ballymeade Country Club, where a replica of Fenway Park, complete with bleachers and the Green Monster, made for a special night of comedy for the Falmouth Commodores.

COTUIT ---- Austin Wood (St. Petersburg) is enjoying the kind of season that most pitchers dream about in the Cape League. He currently sports the second-lowest ERA in the league at 0.36, with only Anthony Ranaudo (LSU), the 39th overall pick of the Red Sox in the MLB draft, ahead of him.

The Brewster Whitecaps are sitting atop the Eastern Division with a solid 11-4 record. They have benefited from excellent pitching and fielding, allowing them to keep their opponents at bay. While most batters have struggled with the transition to wood bats thus far, there is one Whitecap who has seen great success early on: Brewster’s sparkplug and lead-off man, Drew Martinez (Memphis.)
